Amon Kiprotich looks to lead the Hawk men's team to a MEAC Championship

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's cross country teams host the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31.

The women's five-kilometer race begins at 9:45 a.m. and is followed by the men's eight-kilometer race at 10:30 a.m.

The reigning MEAC cross country champion UMES will compete for their third consecutive title and fourth overall. Junior Tamica Thomas (St. Catherine, Jamaica) and senior Celia Whyte (Manchester, Jamaica) have led the way as the top two finishers for the Lady Hawks throughout the season. Thomas and Whyte have season-best times of 19:27.47 and 19:27.78, respectively.

The UMES men look to regain the championship that they won in 2007, while the Norfolk State Spartans look for their second straight title. Juniors Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) and Peter Sang (Kapsabet, Kenya) have been top performers for the Hawks in 2009. Kiprotich and Sang have season-best times of 26:50.63 and 26:20.67, respectively.

The day is also "Adopt-A-Team Day." Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite institution's colors and cheer on their favorite teams.

The event is free and open to the public.

UMES will also host the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 14.
