UMES SCHOLAR-ATHLETES RECOGNIZED FOR WORK IN CLASSROOM

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Over 25 student-athletes at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) will be recognized for their academic achievements this year. These standout scholar-athletes achieved at least a 3.5 GPA for both the fall 2008 semester, as well as, their cumulative average.
According to Assistant Athletic Director of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Dr. Danita Mendez-Townsend, this is the first year of the athletic honor roll. She said, "in the past we just held a scholars luncheon. However, we wanted to do something more to formally recognize their achievements."
Included in the list are members of the 2008 NCAA Championship bowling team, along with the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's volleyball Player of the Year Christina Estebané (El Paso, Texas) and Rookie of the Year Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.).
Other honorees include: Brian White (Virginia Beach, Va.), Russel Deutschmann (Baden, Ont.) and Cameron Zimmerman (Harrisburg, Pa.) of baseball; Katherine Brown (Level Green, Pa.) of women's bowling; Kendra Saunders (Mississauga, Ont.) of softball; Talitha Royster (Glen Burnie, Md.), Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica) and Rashida Beckford (Upper Marlboro, Md.) of women's cross country and track and field; Julian Gomez-Jordan (Houston, Texas), Jamahl Strachan (Nassau, Bahamas), Amon Kirpotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) and Mamadou Diallo (Hyattsville, Md.) of men's cross country and track and field; and Thonya Joseph (Bridgetown, Barbados) and Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) of the women's volleyball team.
