Wilmington, N.C. - Senior Ronald Hill struck out six over five innings and UNCW pounded out 13 hits as the Seahawks defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 16-0, Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improve to 2-0 following the weekend sweep. It is the first time since 1993 that UNCW won its first two games of the season. UMES dips to 0-2.

Junior third baseman Matt Poulk, senior outfielder and freshman catcher Mark Carver each had two hits for the Seahawks. Sophomore first baseman Jonathan Batts slammed his first home run of the season.

Hill scattered three hits before making way for the Seahawk bullpen. Juniors Jared Sutton and Blake Hundley and freshman Allen Flood held the Hawks to two hits while striking out seven over the final four frames.

Freshman Eric Gaines led the UMES lineup with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. Freshman Daniel Sterling suffered the loss allowing five runs, all earned, over three innings.

UNCW plated four runs in the second inning on one hit as Sterling walked the leadoff batter, hit the second batter and then walked the bases. Freshman Justin Barefoot plated the first run of the inning with the third walk of the inning. Carver followed wiht a double down the left field line to move the score to 3-0 UNCW.

Sophomore Chris Hatcher added a RBI single in the third and Poulk singled in a run in the fourth to extend the lead t0 6-0.

UNCW broke the game open with four runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Batts' shot to right center highlighted the seventh inning for the Seahawks.

UMES threatened in the seventh loading the bases with a single by Craig Munch and a pair of walks, but Sutton kept the shutout in tact ending the inning with a ground ball to third.

The Seahawks return to action Feb. 11 hosting Virginia for a three-game series. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. Maryland-Eastern Shore visits Duke the same day for a 1 p.m. start.
