Feb. 11, 2005 DURHAM, N.C. - Trailing 10-2 after six innings, UMES rallied to score six runs in the final three innings falling just short of its first win of the 2005 season. Senior Brandon McCabe (Millsboro, Del./Delaware Valley College) led the team's comeback effort with a two-run homerun in the top of the ninth and also drove in a run in the seventh as the Hawks scored four. The Fighting Hawks (0-3) starting pitcher, sophomore Sean Davis (Salisbury, Md./Bennett H.S.) held the Blue Devils to only one hit over the first two innings, but got in trouble in the third as he allowed three runs on just two hits, all with two outs. The first two runners that scored reached base as Davis (0-1) hit the leadoff hitter with a pitch and then walked the next batter. In the fourth, Duke (2-1) scored four more runs off of Davis as he allowed four straight hits before being relived by freshman Dusty Webster (Deal Island, Md./Washington H.S.). Webster was able to hold the Blue Devils to only five hits over the next two and two-thirds innings, but four walks and a costly error allowed three more runs to cross the plate. Now trailing 10-2 heading into the seventh inning, the Fighting Hawks were finally able to put together some hits and post a big inning. With one out, five straight UMES hitters reached base as Duke committed two errors and walked one. The inning could have been much more problematic for Duke, but on deep fly ball by senior Rob Benak (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill H.S.), McCabe was thrown out trying to score at home for the inning ending double-play.
In the top of the ninth, the Fighting Hawks got the lead-off hitter into scoring position as junior Eric Gaines (Oberlin, Ohio/Eastern Michigan University) walked and stole second. However, Gaines was picked off at second for the first out.
Junior Craig Munch (Sewell, N.J./Delaware Tech) then walked and McCabe followed with a towering homerun to right-center. Duke pitcher, Tony Bajoczky finished off UMES in the ninth securing Greg Burke's (2-0) second victory of the young season. Munch went 2-3 on the afternoon with two walks. He drove in two and scored two more for the Fighting Hawks. McCabe was 1-4 with a walk and three RBI's. UMES will continue its series with Duke on Saturday as Daniel Sterling is scheduled to pitch against Danny Otero. The game will start at 1:00 p.m. The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as Brad Powell will face David Torcise. |
