Feb. 25, 2004 Norfolk, VA - The Norfolk State Spartans held the Maryland Eastern Shore bats silent all afternoon and swept a doubleheader from the Hawks, 4-1 and 3-1 Wednesday. In the opening game, Dereck Casper (0-3) pitched a six-inning complete game for the Hawks, allowing four runs (three earned), but picked up the loss. Bobby Shaw and Greg Cathell each went 2-3 in a losing effort for UMES (2-5 overall, 0-2 MEAC), while Rob Benak scored the team's only run. Norfolk State's Anthony Blair pitched six strong innings in game two, allowing one run on only two hits to pick up the 3-1 win. Joel Maher scored the Hawks lone run, while Leon Tilghman (0-1) pitched another complete game and gave up only two earned runs in the loss. The UMES offense was held to just two hits in the seven-inning contest.
The Hawks return home for a doubleheader Friday afternoon against Lehigh University. The first pitch is scheduled for noon from Hawk Stadium.
