Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (UMES) (2-7) dropped their third and fourth home contests of the season today to another tough Hawk squad, this one from Lehigh University (6-0) by scores of 5-1 and 11-4.

The Hawks are beginning a three-day home stand that will test their pitching staff as both of today's starters were working on four days rest while tomorrow's will be working on three. The pitching proved tough behind the arm of Shawn Davis who had a solid outing allowing only three earned runs on three hits in six and one third innings. The Hawks bats accounted for five hits, one more than Lehigh, but UMES errors, four of them, and a brilliant pitching performance by Lehigh starter Adam Marr proved their downfall in game one.

Marr went a complete game seven innings allowing five hits, one run, which was unearned, one walk and totaled ten strikeouts. While Joel Maher got to him in the leadoff spot, going 2-4 on the day, he was otherwise unblemished giving up one hit to Pete Mayta and another to Graylon Kitchens. The other lone hit of the day was a double to the left center gap by catcher Butch Mills who recorded his first hit of the season. Mills scored the lone run in the second inning when a throw by Mountain Hawk second baseman John Zaszewski pulled the first baseman off the bag on a Kitchens infield shot that allowed Mills to keep running and Kitchens to be safe at first.

In game two the alphabet soup pitching staff of Lehigh, Joe Raniszewski, Matt Mezzancello, and Kyle Stawicki combined for seven innings of nine hit work. They allowed four runs, three earned and managed only two strike outs. UMES pitching was also roughed up for 11 runs. Kitchens made the start, getting the loss and dropping to 1-1. He allowed six earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work. James Walls and Dwayne Wallace finished the game allowing a combined five runs, three of which were earned. UMES had three errors in the nightcap.

The hitting picked up for the Hawks who would keep getting close but never able to tie Lehigh. They got their first run in the third inning when Maher took a one out walk and was moved to second by a Mayta. Greg Cathell then reached on an error, which allowed Maher to score. They put another run on the board in the fifth when Kaz Beverly led off with his first of two doubles. He went to third on a Maher ground out and then scored when Mayta reached on an error.

UMES picked up two runs in the sixth inning to cut it to an 8-4 Lehigh advantage. Rob Benak opened the inning with a single through the left side and then went to third on a Leon Tilghman double to right field. A wild pitch from Mezzancello scored Benak and moved Tilghman to third. Dereck Casper, who was pinch-hitting, grounded out to the shortstop but solid base running by Tilghman scored the second Hawk run of the inning.

Lehigh matched the Hawks hit total of 14 on the day but took advantage of errors and extra bases to pull out the wins. Catcher Matt McBride was 3-6 on the day with two runs and two RBIs. Zaszewski chipped in going 4-7 with a run and three RBIs while Jesse Novalis went 2-6 with two runs and two RBIs.

The Fighting Hawks had four players collect two hits apiece as Beverly, Benak, Tilghman, and Maher each pounded out a pair. Mayta and Casper collected RBIs.

UMES takes on The Mount of Mt. Saint Mary's College tomorrow in double-header action beginning at 12:00 pm at Hawks Stadium. Admission is free.
