Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (UMES) (2-10) struggled on the mound today, using five different pitches as there starting rotation was unable to go having pitched over the last two days. In a one-game, nine-inning contest the Hawks allowed the Mount to rack up 27 runs on 27 hits, defeating them 27-10.

The struggling pitching overshadowed a great offensive day for the Hawks who recorded ten runs, a season high, and collected 14 hits.

While The Mount struck first in the opening inning, the Hawks quickly tied it up when Joel Maher led-off with a double to left field. He was advanced on a Greg Cathell ground out and then scored on a Bobby Shaw single to center to tie the game.

After a scoreless second inning Mt. Saint Mary's scored three in the third to take the 4-1 lead. The Hawks got two back right away. Cathell led-off wit a two-out walk and then scored on Shaw's second hit of the day, a double to right center. Shaw then crossed the plate after a Benak single. The two teams went back and forth. The Mount again scored two in the fourth but UMES got one of their own when Butch Mills second after walking. He tagged home after Maher reached on an error. After four innings it was Mt. Saint Mary's in the lead, 6-4.

Starter James Walls took the hill in the fifth inning but allowed a single and walk and Head Coach Bobby Rodriguez was forced to go to his bullpen. He didn't. With tired arms in the pen he brought in left fielder Kaz Beverly who gave up a walk to load the bases. A Stephan Fay sac fly scored the first of four Mount runs in the inning. It was followed by an RBI double by John Digirolamo and a Joseph Kotula sac fly that scored two.

The Hawks got two back when Cathell led off with a single up the middle and was followed two batters later by a Robert Benak triple to right center. Graylon Kitchens singled up the middle to score Benak. UMES was down 10-6.

Mt. Saint Mary's scored four more in the sixth, seven in the seventh, and six in the eight to push their total on the day to 27 runs on 27 hits. They went through Hawk pitchers Bobby Shaw, Robert Benak, and Terrell Harris.

The Hawks added two runs in the sixth and eighth innings respectively. The two in the sixth came when Pete Mayta singled to first. Andrew S. Frey, now playing third base walked after a Maher fly out. Cathell got his second hit of day driving in Mayta and moving Frey to second. Shaw then doubled, he went 4-5 on the day, to center and scored Frey. In the eighth inning, Cathell led-off with a walk and Shaw drove him in on a triple to left center. Pitcher, Harris, was forced to get his first collegiate at bat, and while grounding out, drove in a run. Giving the Hawks ten runs on the board.

Benak and Mills each went 2-4 on the day while Benak drove in two and Shaw four. Cathell, Harris, and Kitchens all had one RBI apiece.

UMES now goes on the road to Philadelphia, PA to take on the Temple Owls in a nine-inning contest on Tuesday, March 2nd starting at 3:00 pm. Their next home game is Thursday vs. Central Connecticut. That is a double header starting at 1:00 pm.
