PRINCESS ANNE, Md - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) fell 6-5 to the George Washington University Colonials in a game that saw the eighth inning determine the outcome. Both starting pitchers were dominant as Dustin Longchamps got the loss, working five innings and allowing just one earned run, two hits and three walks while striking out five. His counterpart, GW's Scott Swinson, worked five and one third innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs while giving up a pair of walks.

Longchamps took the unlucky loss with his team trailing by that lone run after his departure. GW led off the fifth with a Whitely Wallace walk. He went to second on a ground out and scored on the only hit of the inning, a single to left by Gavin Swanson.

GW (1-6) added four runs in the sixth off of reliever Daniel Sterling who gave up all four runs earned and two walks over four hits in two thirds of an inning.

As they haven't all year, UMES didn't quit, they answered back in the bottom of the sixth scoring three runs to make it a 5-3 game. Josh Dean led-off with a single to left center and went to second on an Eric Gaines ground out. After Ken Richardson walked Joel Gonzalez doubled to right and went to third on the throw to the plate. Both runs were across safely. Justin Hoban then singled up the middle to plate Gonzalez.

GW got what would be the winning run in the eighth off of reliever Michael Willey. Wallace was hit by a pitch and subsequently stole second. A Swanson single would score him.

Still fighting UMES (1-7) started the bottom of the eighth with a one out bunt single by Richardson. Gonzalez then singled to left and Hoban followed with a single through the left side that would plate Richardson and put Gonzalez on second. After a strike out, Kevin Hillenburg hit a two out RBI single to center to score Gonzalez. GW retired the final batter to stop the rally and the score would be 6-5 and remain there at the end as Ryan LaPointe would earn the save for the Colonials. Swinson would earn the win for GW, his first of the season.

On the day Gonzalez (2-3) and Hoban (2-4) each had a pair of hits. Gonzalez had two runs and two RBI in the game while Hoban added another pair of RBI. Richardson had two of the Hawks five runs with Dean getting the other one. UMES is back in action this weekend taking on Fairleigh Dickinson University in a pair of double headers Saturday and Sunday. Game time is noon on both days.
