PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Fighting Hawks rebounded from a tough loss yesterday to Pittsburgh to play well against The University of Rhode Island (URI), taking a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning before giving up a pair of runs and falling 3-2. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) junior lefty Mike Roberts took the hill and the loss but pitched well for the second straight start, throwing seven innings and allowing just two earned runs and three walks while striking out six. The Hawks posted one run in the fourth inning when Russell Deutschmann tripled to right center. He would score on a sacrifice fly by Ken Richardson to foul territory in deep right field. Rhode Island (1-4) tied it up in the fifth inning when Evan Laude singled through the right side to start the inning. Casey Ide would sacrifice Laude to second and Laude moved to third when Kenny Burns reached on an error by the Hawk's Remo Orsini. Oliver Palmer flew out to left to plate Laude for the sacrifice fly. The Hawks (0-7) took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning. Orsini led-off with a single through the left side and went to second on an error in left field. Phil Vaughn then reached on a dribbler to the pitcher and Orsini advanced to third. After Vaughn stole second Josh Dunham would ground out to the shortstop and plate Orsini for the go ahead run. Up 2-1, UMES sent the starter, Roberts, back out for the eighth inning. Palmer led-off with a double to right center and Zoey Angulo singled to center and plated Palmer to tie the game. Zach Zaneski singled on a bunt and runners were on first and second. The Hawks replaced Roberts with junior Elliott Arrington. After a fielder's choice recorded an out and put Angulo on third, Rob Deveney doubled to left to plate Angulo and take the 3-2 lead. UMES was unable to score in the eighth or ninth innings. Dan Rossignol, who entered in the seventh, finished out the eighth for the win. Jamie Degidio closed out the ninth for the save. On the day Ryan Coppi and Vaughn would both for 2-4. Orsini and Deutschmann both had one hit each while Dunham and Richardson had the RBI. For the Rams, Palmer, Zanesky and Deveny had two hits each. Burns, Angulo and Laude had one hit each. Palmer, Angulo and Deveney had the RBI. "It was a great game and great effort," said Head Coach William Gardner. "Roberts just ran out of gas. He pitched great and we played well. We just have to find a way to win these close games." UMES plays Rhode Island tomorrow at noon and then takes on Pittsburgh at 3:00 p.m. at Hawks Stadium.
