PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Baseball team played a split double header today taking on the University of Rhode Island (URI) in game one and the University of Pittsburgh (PITT) in game two. UMES dropped both games, the first to the Rams 18-2 and the second to the Panthers, 10-0.

In game one the Hawks were down 3-0 after URI plated three in the second inning. They added three more in the fifth inning to make the lead 6-0.

The Hawks battled back in the bottom of the fifth to score one run. With two out lead-off hitter Phil Vaughn singled through the right side. Josh Dunham then doubled to left, plating the speedy Vaughn for the Hawks' first run.

The Rams exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to make it 11-1 but the Hawks cut the lead to under ten in their half of an inning adding a run. It came when Ryan Coppi led-off with a single to center and advanced on a passed ball to second base. Matt Witte grounded out for the second out of the inning but Coppi went to third on the hard hit ball. He would score on a Mike Guy single up the middle to make it 11-2.

Rhode Island got to the pitcher Witte in the ninth, getting seven runs on seven hits and two Hawk errors. That would the make the final score a lop-sided 18-2.

Dunham and Guy would get the RBI for the Hawks and Vaughn and Pat Herceinger would each go 2-5 in the game.

For the Rams designated hitter John Rusin would go 3-4 with four RBI and a pair of runs. Mike O'Malley was 3-7 with a run and three RBI while Dan Rhault added three RBI. Kenny Burns and Oliver Palmer had two RBI each. Palmer scored four times while Shaun Hagey and Zach Zaneski each scored three times.

Nick Greenwood got the win for URI to improve to 1-1. He went six innings and gae up one earned run and struck out six. Ken Richardson took his first loss of the season, pitching five and third innings, allowing 11 runs, eight earned and walking three. He struck out four batters.

 

 

In game two the score was closer but the Hawk offense was quiet. Pittsburgh went on to a 10-0 win posting two runs each in the second, fifth and sixth innings while adding three in third and one run in the fourth.

The Hawks collected just three hits in the game. Dunham, Hercinger and Coppi each singled in the contest.

Brian Chrisman picked up the win throwing five and two thirds innings, allowing three hits and striking out seven. Dan Sterling would take the loss throwing 124 pitches in five and one third innings. He allowed 10 runs, seven earned on nine hits and seven walks. He recorded five Ks.

For URI Sean Conley went 3-5 with four RBI while Jordan Herr was 2-3 with two runs and two RBI. Chris Tonte scored twice while Dan Williams was 2-4 with an RBI on the day.

The game was called after seven innings due to darkness.

UMES now hits the road for the first time this season traveling to Charleston, S.C. to face Charleston Southern University in a three game series starting on Friday March 7 and concluding on Sunday the ninth.
