PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) dropped game one of a double header 16-4 to the visiting Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) and remained tied, 5-5 in game two. Game two will be picked up tomorrow at 11:00 am starting the seventh and final inning. UMES (1-9) gave up two runs in the first to the Knights on a Vincent Pennacchio single that plated John Paganotti and Matt Maher. The Hawks battled right back scoring one in the first. Eric Gaines led-off with a triple and a sacrifice fly by Richardson to right plated him. The UMES bats would fall silent after that until the third inning. In that frame they added another run by Gaines who walked in the inning. He scored on a Joel Gonzalez double to center. In the meantime FDU added four runs in the second and two in the third to end the third inning with the Knights winning 8-2. UMES added one run in the sixth and one in the seventh. Tyler Winch picked up the RBI in the sixth when Gonzalez scored and Josh Dean got the RBI in the seventh on a sacrifice fly that scored James Walls. Jamar Cadejuste took the loss for UMES working one full inning and allowing six runs, only two of which were earned. The Hawks worked five different pitchers in the game with Daniel Sterling throwing five innings and allowing five runs, four earned. Stephen Eng went eight innings for FDU picking up the win. He allowed five hits, four runs, three earned, and just one walk. Ryan Hennessy worked the ninth to finish the game. Jovan Santos and Chris Grabowski both had four hits in the game. Grabowski had two runs and three RBI while Santos had four runs and an RBI. Maher was 2-4 with three runs and two RBI.
In game two FDU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second but the Hawks answered right back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. Dean picked up an RBI and Walls stole home to account for the runs. The Knights added a run in the third but UMES added three. All were unearned as second baseman Jeff Vincent threw it away trying to catch a runner off of second and the Hawks took advantage to plate two and Hoban scored when Cadejuste reached on a fielder's choice. UMES looked poised to win with the game officially in and skies darkening but FDU rallied in the sixth to tie the game at five on a close play at the plate where Vincent somehow got by the catcher Hoban. The Hawks went in order in the bottom of the inning and the game will be resumed tomorrow at 11:00 am. It is a scheduled seven inning game. Immediately after the conclusion of the suspended game, UMES and FDU will meet again for another double header. |
