Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (UMES) (2-12-1) got an incredible pitching performance today in game two of a double header with the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut State University (1-0-1). That performance didn't earn freshman starter Sean Davis a win, but he didn't take a loss either as the Hawks tied the Blue Devils 2-2. The game, scheduled for seven innings went eight before being called for darkness, ending in a 2-2 tie. Central Connecticut won game one 11-3. Davis was in complete command throwing the entire game, over 130 pitches, and only allowed five hits and two unearned runs. He walked four and struck out four while facing 34 batters. The game was a pitchers duel as Central Conn. threw Ryan Marshall for four and one third innings and Mark Peterson for the final three and two thirds. While Peterson stifled the Hawks, Marshall gave up three hits, two earned runs and two walks in his collegiate debut. Both teams scored in the fourth inning. The Hawks got their runs after first baseman Greg Cathell drew a one out walk. An Anthony Jackson double down the left field line pushed Cathell to third and the Hawks had runners on second and third with one out. Graylon Kitchens hit a single off the pitchers mound to score Cathell while Jackson scored on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by catcher Butch Mills. Unfortunately, the lone remaining Hawk hit would come in the sixth inning on another Jackson hit, this one a single up the middle.
The UMES offense looked like they would be shut out for the first time this season in game one but three runs in the seventh prevented that from happening. In that inning UMES got their runs on two hits and two Blue Devil errors. Donnell Queen, pinch-hitting for his first appearance as a Hawk, was hit by a pitch in his first collegiate plate appearance. That was followed one out later by a James Walls walk and UMES had runners on first and second base. Centerfielder Joel Maher was up next and hit into a sure out but pitcher Evan Scribner opted to throw for the out at second base and overthrew the bag. Maher went to second, Walls to third and Queen scored for the Hawks. Next up Pete Mayta hit a hard shot at the third baseman that he was unable to make a play on and collected an RBI scoring Walls. Cathell stepped in hit a double to right center and scored Maher. Bobby Shaw and Rob Benak were unable to push Mayta or Cathell across but UMES was on the board.
In that game pitching again showed some fatigue as Dereck Casper (0-5) started the game and took the loss despite four strong innings of work. In the fifth he allowed six runs before being lifted for Kitchens. Coming off a solid outing against Coppin State, Kitchens was unable to get more than one out allowing four runs, three earned. Ryan Blevins and Shaw finished the game. Blevins allowed one unearned run and Shaw pitched a shut out seventh inning. In the fifth the Blue Devils recorded ten runs. The Hawks' Cathell was 3-5 on the day with a run and an RBI. Mayta went 2-7 with a run batted in, and 2-5 with a run. For the Blue Devils, Keith Stegbauer went 4-7 with a run, Dan Tarnowski was 1-2 with a run and RBI, while first baseman Phil Rothkugel went 3-7 with two runs and three RBIs reaching base six times. There were four other Blue Devils with two RBIs apiece. UMES now prepares for another Connecticut team, taking on the University of Hartford on Saturday and Sunday. They host the Hawks in a double-header beginning at 1:00pm on Saturday and at noon in a one game nine-inning contest on Sunday. All games are played at Hawks Stadium and are free to the public. |
