Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Baseball team picked up another win and its first tie of the season today in the cold of Hawks Stadium. UMES defeated the Blackbirds of Long Island University (LIU) 5-3 in game one and tied LIU in game two, 1-1.

UMES (3-8-1) got a solid pitching performance from junior Jason Janeski, who picked up his first win of the season, throwing seven innings and allowing just five hits, two walks and three runs, with only one being earned. Michael Willey picked up his first career save in two innings of work.

Errors were a plenty in game one with LIU (0-1-1) committing seven and the Hawks three.

Justin Hoban went 2-4 in game one, collecting a run while senior Morgan Schirmer was 1-3 scoring a pair or runs and recording an RBI.

Long Island opened the game by taking a 3-0 lead after one half inning. They collected three runs on just one hit with the Hawks committing all three of their errors in the opening frame. They would settle in and commit no more.

UMES would get two back in the bottom of the first after Eric Gaines reached on an error by the left fielder and quickly advanced to second base. Joel Maher would follow with a walk but be would be cut down after Greg Cathell reached on a fielder's choice. That would put Gaines on third. He would keep running and score after the pitcher made a bad throw to the plate. Justin Hoban followed by hitting a single to right with Cathell going to third. He would then score when Ronald Quick grounded out.

UMES would add one run in the second, third and eighth innings with the help of LIU errors and pick up the win, 5-3.

In game two the Hawks got another pitching gem from Dustin Longchamps as he would work a complete game seven innings, allowing just four hits, one walk and one run.

Mike Maynard for the Blackbirds was solid as well, working six innings and allowing just three Hawk hits and one walk. He would strike out seven.

Those three UMES hits came off the bats of Gaines, Bernie Stratchko and Brandon Records, who recorded his first collegiate hit. Gaines would score the lone run. That would come in the sixth inning when Gaines would single to third to start the inning. Maher would sacrifice him over and Cathell would ground out to put Gaines on third. Quick would reach on an error by the second baseman and score Gaines.

LIU got their lone run in the top of the sixth as Sean Durkin walked and went to second on a Tim Doherty ground out. After a wild pitch put Durkin on third, Frank DiMasi hit a towering shot to sacrifice Durkin home.

The game was called after seven innings due to darkness.

On the day LIU got a 3-7 effort from Robert Rowen and a 2-5 effort from James Adamo.

The Hawks take on the same LIU squad tomorrow at noon in a nine-inning affair at Hawks Stadium.
