Box Score

Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Baseball team couldn't seem to find the right pitcher today as Long Island University put the ball everywhere the Hawks weren't, tallying 17 hits and 11 runs to take game three of the three-game series by a score of 11-7.

UMES continued their solid play, opening the game in the first inning and taking a one run lead. Eric Gaines led-off with a single to center, went to second on a balk and moved to third when Joel Maher reached on an error. Bernie Stratchko sacrificed him home on a fly out to right.

LIU got two runs back in the third and one in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead but UMES took the advantage right back, tallying four runs in the fourth.

Brad Powell got things started with a single to right and went to second on a Brandon Records single to left center. Pete Mayta laid down a bunt to the pitcher and advanced both runners. Gaines would dig in with no outs and send a shot to center field that would score Powell and move Records to third while he moved to second on the throw. Maher would bring both of them home on his shot to right. Startchko would take pitcher Kenny Cedel down the left field line to score Maher and give UMES the 5-3 lead.

In the top of the fifth LIU added another run Robert Rowen would score on a wild pitch. He had reached earlier on a single through the left side.

The Hawks increased their lead in the same inning. They took the 7-4 advantage when Maher hit a two out single to right that would score Powell who had led -off with a walk. Gaines scored the other run when Maher stole second and he stole home as the catcher threw to second base. Both were safe.

That would end the Hawk scoring. They got a solid outing from starter Ken Richardson who went five complete innings allowing six runs, only three of which were earned. Richardson threw the ball well but LIU put the ball through holes in the infield and outfield on most of their hits. Jamar Cadejuste picked up the loss in one inning of work, allowing three hits and one run. That was the one run LIU needed to take the lead.

Pete Orsi was the winner for the Blackbirds as he went three and one third innings , allowing four hits and two runs. Ryan Ekburg worked the final inning and two thirds to earn the save.

On the day UMES got a 2-5 appearance at the plate from Gaines who added three runs and an RBI. Maher also went 2-5 with a run and three RBI. Stratchko went 2-4 with two RBI. Pwell scored a pair of runs and had one hit.

LIU's Rowen went a whopping 4-6 at the dish knocking in two runs and scoring a pair. James Adamo was 3-5 in the effort and had a run and two RBI. Danny Etkin was 3-5 with two runs.

UMES next hits the road on Wednesday as they take on the University of Virginia. They return home next Saturday, March 11, 2006 when they battle Navy at noon.
