Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (UMES) (2-13-1) dropped a double header pair to the visiting Hawks of Hartford University (2-0) today by scores of 3-0 and 16-5. The game one shut out was the first time the Hawks were held scoreless all season.

Game one saw a strong pitching performance from starter Leon Tilghman who went a complete game nine innings and allowed three runs, two earned, while striking out two and allowing no walks. UMES got only two hits on the day, getting one from Robert Benak and another from Anthony Jackson, while on base they each recorded a stolen base.

Hartford got two runs in the first inning on a home run from Ron Acabbo who drove in Rick Langer who had reached on an error to start the inning. They got their other run in the eighth inning when Accabo led off with a double and was pushed home on a two out single through the right side by Frank Cipolla. The Hawks of Hartford got strong pitching from Jarrett Stawarz who went six innings and allowed one hit and one walk while recording six Ks. Scott Roy picked up the save working three innings allowing one hit and one walk.

In game two the Hawks of UMES got the bats going picking up ten hits and pushing across five runs. It would not be enough however as Hartford went through five UMES pitchers on rout to scoring 16 runs on 12 hits. Graylon Kitchens took the loss to fall to 1-2 while Jeff Swedberg pitched four innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs but improved his record to 1-0 on the season.

UMES got a run in the second to tie the game after Hartford scored in the first. The UMES run came when Rob Benak led off with a triple to center field and was sacrificed home by Anthony Jackson.

 

 

Hartford broke it open in the third scoring seven runs on five hits. UMES countered with three runs of their own. The Fighting Hawks started off with a single up the middle from catcher James Walls who went to second on a balk. Pete Mayta hit a single to center and pushed Walls to third. With two outs Bobby Shaw came to the plate and doubled to center driving in both runs. Benak, continuing his hot hitting doubled to left and scored Shaw. It was 8-4 after three innings.

UMES would only get one more run. That came in the sixth when back-to-back doubles by Benak and Jackson that would score Benak and give Jackson his second RBI of the day.

Hartford scored three runs in the fourth and sixth innings and two in the ninth to secure the win.

Accabo had another solid game hitting 3-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Brian Eck, the DH in game two, hit 2-3 with three runs and four RBIs, including a home run, and Kyle O'Neill went 2-3 with two runs and three RBIs.

The Hawks of UMES now take on the U.S. Naval Academy on Tuesday in Annapolis, MD. The Hawks swept the Midshipmen earlier in the season in Princess Anne. The game is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
