Charlottesville, Va. - The Fighting Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) headed down to take on the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia in baseball action on Tuesday. The Hawks didn't fair so well, falling 20-3 in game one and 15-0 in game two. The Hawks managed only eight hits on the day, comparatively UVA produced 35, the same as amount as their runs.

Hawk pitching struggled against the well-oiled hitting machine of the Wahoos as Kevin Hillenburg took the loss in game one, throwing just three and one third innings and allowing 13 hits and ten runs, eight of which were earned.

In game two UMES put lefty Mike Roberts on the hill. In three innings Roberts allowed seven hits, five walks and eight earned runs.

The offense came in game one for the Hawks, all in the second inning. At the end of the inning the Hawks trailed 4-3 but UVA added three more runs in their half of the inning. Justin Hoban led that inning off for the Hawks who immediately loaded the bases following walks by Bernie Stratchko and Anthony Jackson. Morgan Schirmer followed with a single to center that would plate Hoban and Stratchko. Jackson would score later when Brad Powell laid down the most exciting play in baseball, a suicide squeeze that would also put Schirmer on second.

That would be the only scoring UMES would manage on the day.

In game one Hoban was two for three with a run while Schirmer went three for three with two RBI. In game two the hits were few and far between. UMES got their firs tin the field on a Greg Cathell single to left. Eric Gaines and Hoban would also record a knock and those three would be all the Hawks could muster.

UMES will next take on an opponent a little more to their liking. The United State Naval Academy comes to Hawks Stadium over the weekend for a double header starting at noon on Saturday, March 11, 2006 followed by a single game the following day, also starting at noon. Navy is a team the Hawks swept the last time they meant in 2004 on February 22nd. UMES won 2-1 and 3-2.
