ARLINGTON, Va. - Junior Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) and freshman Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) hit the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team's first two home runs of the season but it wasn't enough as the Hawks fell to George Washington, 5-2, at Barcroft Park Wednesday. GW, which got a two-run two-out single from Tom Zebroski in the bottom of sixth to break open a 3-2 game, improved to 8-4 on the season. UMES dropped to 0-12 despite a two-hit effort from freshman Lucas Koenig (Berlin, Md.). The Colonials got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the opening inning. A single by Paul Pakan and double to left center from Chris Luick put runners on second and third with one out before Chris Holland drove a 2-1 pitch to right field to score Pakan. Curtis Eward followed with an RBI base hit to make it 2-0. Chaikowsky led off the second inning for UMES with his homer to right field off a 3-1 pitch. The Colonials tallied the game-winning run in their half of the second. With a runner on first and one out, Zebroski reached on a fielder's choice and Robbie Haben went to second on a Koenig throwing error. Pakan then singled up the middle to score Zebroski before UMES starter Matt Witte (Westminster, Md.) induced a groundball double play to get out of the inning. Johnson's bomb came in the fifth. He took an 0-1 pitch deep to center with two outs to get the Hawks within one at 3-2. That's the way it stayed until Zebroski's clutch base hit off senior Carl Huber (Mount Airy, Md.). UMES threatened in both the seventh and eighth, leaving two runners on base in both frame but couldn't push anything across. Witte (0-3) took the loss for the Hawks, pitching the first two innings. He scattered six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out two.
Freshman Tony Gonzalez (New Braunfels, Texas) was the first of five to releave Witte, going three innings and surrendering just one hit and a walk while using 29 pitches. Ryan Heinz (1-0) earned the win for GW in six innings. He gave up four hits and two runs with five strikeouts and a walk. The Hawks return home Saturday, March 13 to play Binghamton in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. |
