Princess Anne, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawk Baseball squad struggled on the mound for the second straight series, allowing the U.S. Naval Academy (12-5-1) to sweep a double header at Hawks Stadium by scores of 14-0 and 11-3. Navy collected 34 hits between the two games.

UMES (3-13-1) saw their only runs of the day come in game two. The Hawks managed one run in the first inning and two in the fifth.

They got their first run when Eric Gaines, who led-off with a double down the left field line, moved to third on a Greg Cathell ground-out and then scored on a wild pitch.

The final two runs came when Morgan Schirmer singled through the left side to open the inning. With two outs Gaines singled to the shortstop but an error allowed him to go to second and put Greg Ennis, who pinch ran for Schirmer to wind up on third. Joel Maher would then record the Hawks only RBI of the game, driving in both Ennis and Gaines.

Ronald Quick and Scot Givens would also record a hit in the game.

In game one UMES would manage just three hits, one coming off the bat of Quick and the other two from Maher. The light hitting came because of Navy's solid pitching. M. Harris would work seven innings, giving up just two hits, no walks and striking out 11 Hawks.

Jason Janeski and Ken Richardson would pick up the losses for UMES.

The Navy bats were hot. As a team they hit .405 between the two games. T. Hamilton and R. McGinn each had five hits on the day while D. Lopez and M. Harris had four each. Lopez had two triples in the contests.

The Hawks look to right the ship on Sunday, March 12, 2006 when they face the same Hawk squad at noon in the final game of the three game set.
