March 12, 2005 PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore dropped its opening contest in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, falling to Coppin State 14-2 in a nine-inning game. UMES (2-12, 0-1) and Coppin State (1-11, 1-0) were scheduled to play a double-header on Saturday, but due the recent rain storms the field was not ready by the scheduled game time. UMES fell behind early as they gave up two runs in the first inning and another run in the second. Trailing 3-0, CSU added two more in the fourth before UMES was able to get a run across the plate in the bottom half of the inning. Three of the first five runs scored by the Eagles reached base via walks by Hawk pitching. UMES added another run in the fifth to cut the lead down to three before Coppin State was able to post nine more runs over the final four innings. Starting pitcher Ken Richardson (0-2) got the loss as he went three innings giving up three runs. Brad Powell relieved Richardson and went three innings allowing four runs, but only one was earned. CSU starter, Bill Auch (1-1) earned his first win of the season and Coppin State's first victory which ended an 11-game losing streak in the young season. UMES has now dropped five straight following their quick two-game win streak. Brandon McCabe led the way for UMES as he went 2-3 on the afternoon.
UMES will look to rebound from the loss as they will play a double-header on Sunday, March 13, 2005 against the Eagles.
