PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Mark Quaranta lined the first pitch to right-center field to score Shane Eyler from first base in the top of the 10th inning as Mount Saint Mary's defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 8-7, in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Hawks Stadium Tuesday.

The Mount (5-6) completed the sweep, winning the nightcap, 15-4, in seven innings.

Tied, 7-7, in the 10th in Game 1, Quaranta took Jacob Foreman's (Little Orleans, Md.) two-out fastball into the gap for the lead and the Mountaineers held UMES scoreless in the bottom of the frame for the win.

Quaranta finished the first game 4-for-6 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI.

UMES (1-13) led, 7-6, after five innings, rallying with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead.

Franklin Armstrong (Trenton, N.J.) singled through the left side with the bases loaded and one out, cutting the deficit to 6-5. Two batters later, Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) doubled home Armstrong and Nick Wiggins (Littleton Colo.).

Mount Saint Mary's tied the game in the eighth with Foreman (0-3) on in relief of Bernard Parker (Waldorf, Md.). Foreman walked the first two in the inning and with one out, Quaranta doubled to left, plating Sam Nott.

Elliott Alston (Littleton, Colo.) paced UMES with a 3-for-6 effort in Game 1 with a double and a runwhile Armstrong was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.

UMES jumped out to a 2-0 lead with runs in the first two innings. Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) belted his third home run of the season over the wall in right center in the first and Armstrong plated Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) with a base hit in the second before MSM took the lead with three runs in the third.

 

 

A James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) sacrifice fly pulled the Hawks even in the bottom of the third but the Mount scored three in the in the top of the fourth. The inning was highlighted by an RBI triple from Zach Hellman and a run-scoring single by Michael Foster.

Dan Horner (1-0) earned the win in relief of starter Andrew Schrock. Horner pitched 5.1 innings scattering two hits and walk while fanning four.

Schrock allowed 12 hits and seven earned runs with five strikeouts and a walk in 4.2 innings.

Parker relieved Tyler Witte (Westminster, Md.) and went three innings, surrendering three hits and three walks. He also struck out two.

The Mount scored eight times in the first inning of the nightcap and Karl Lamont (2-1) pitched five innings of one-run baseball to help MSM to the sweep.

The Mount sent 13 men to the plate banging out six hits and also used two UMES errors to take the lead. Andrew Caron, Tommy Flynn and Helman had RBI hits in the frame.

UMES cut it to 12-4 in the bottom of the sixth when Wiggins snuck a double down the left-field line scoring Campbell, Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Brent Lewis (Salisbury, Md.).

Foster batted 5-for-5 with a stolen base and Helman was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Johnson had three hits and a steal for UMES.

Karim Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico) lasted just two innings, giving up 10 runs (six earned) on nine hits for the loss. Gonzalez (1-3) gave way to three Hawks' relievers.

UMES travels to Richmond for a three-game-set with the Spiders starting Friday. First pitch is 3 p.m.
