SAVANNAH, Ga. - They can't get a break. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) out hit and committed less errors but a costly overthrow in the final inning allowed the go ahead run to score and the Fighting Hawks dropped game two of a double header to the Tigers of Savannah State University (SSU) 3-2. They fell in game one 4-1 as SSU took both ends of the double header. In the nightcap the Tigers (12-6) jumped out to a 2-0 lead scoring once in the first and second innings off of Hawk hurler Carl Huber. Huber would settle down after that going six innings and allowing no more earned runs. He would finish allowing just three hits and four walks but take the loss. UMES (0-19) responded in the fifth inning getting lead-off batter Michael Guy on with a walk and to second on a Jorge Pichardo ground out. Tyler Love would follow with a walk to put runners on first and second for Josh Dunham who singled to center to load the bases. Phillip Vaughn would dig in and pick up the easy RBI, drawing a walk. Down 2-1 the Hawks tied the game in the seventh and final inning. Dunham had the hot bat and led-off with a double to right center. Vaughn would sacrifice him over to third and one batter later Pat Hercinger would single, plating Dunham. All tied at two SSU would get the lead-off batter on with a walk, move him to second on a balk and then walk the next batter to make it first and second, no out. The starter Huber was still throwing well but a sacrifice bunt by T. Smith would go awry. Smith reach on the fielder's choice and the throw to third from home would go into left field, allowing D. Washington to score the winning run.
The game was in the Hawks' favor as they out hit the Tigers 5-3 and committed the one costly error while SSU had two. Guy, Love and Hercinger each had one hit while Dunham had the pair of hits. In the first game SSU took a 2-0 lead, scoring once in the first and third innings. UMES cut the lead in half with a run of their own in the fourth inning. The Tigers extended their lead back to two in the fifth with another single run. They made it four when they plated another run in the seventh, setting the final margin, 4-1. The Hawks had four hits in the game with Vaughn, Orsini, Dunham and Ryan Coppi all getting a hit.
