UMES NINTH-INNING RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 7-5 LOSS TO RICHMOND

RICHMOND, Va. - Phil Ruzbarsky batted 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored and Andrew Brockett allowed three runs in 6.2 innings to lead Richmond to a 7-5 win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team at Pitt Field Friday.
Mike Merganthaler hit a two-run double with two outs in the seventh and Ruzbarsky added an RBI single to make it a 7-3 game. UMES (1-15) mounted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, pushing across a pair of runs and had runners on second and third with two outs when Elliott Alston (Littleton, Colo.) flied to right field to end the game.
Nick Wiggins (Littleton, Colo.) led off the ninth with a double down the left-field line and moved to third on a balk. With one out, pinch hitter Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) tripled to gap in right center before Tre-Von Johnson East New Market, Md.) worked a walk.
James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) followed with a RBI single to right on the first pitch of the at-bat from Alex Maffett to bring up Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.), who hit a third-inning solo home run. Chaikowsky could only advance the runners with a groundout before the Alston flyball that right fielder Merganthaler nearly misplayed.
Chaikowsky paced the UMES offense going 2-for-4 with his fourth home run and two RBI. Newsome and Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.) also collected two hits apiece for the Hawks.
Brockett (1-2) earned the win for the Spiders scattered six hits and three earned runs with eight strikeouts and five walks. Matt Witte (Westminster, Md.) took the loss, falling to 1-3 in seven innings. He he gave up four runs in the second and third prior to settling down to retire 12 consecutive batters from the end of the third to the seventh inning. In all, he allowed seven runs - five earned - on nine hits and three walks. He also fanned five.
UMES took a 2-1 lead in the third on Chaikowsky's bomb before a double-play groundout hit by Newsome scored Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.).
Richmond (7-10-2) responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. Leadoff hitter Mike Small walked and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Zink and throwing error by third baseman Mena. Zink stole second and Ruzbarsky doubled to right center followed by a Brett Williams run-scoring single. Chaikowsky plated Newsome, who started the top of the fifth with a double, with a single himself to cut it to 4-3.
The teams play Game 2 of the series Saturday at 2 p.m. UMES will send right-hander Jacob Foreman (Little Orleans, Md.) (0-3, 9.51 ERA) to the hill against UR lefty Chris Bates (0-0, 8.71).
