HAWKS SWEEP COPPIN STATE IN DOUBLE DIP TO OPEN MEAC PLAY

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Sophomore Matt Witte (Westminster, Md.) and junior Cameron Zimmerman (Harrisburg, Pa.) combined to limit Coppin State to three runs on 11 hits in a University of Maryland Eastern Shore doubleheader sweep, 12-0 and 14-3, to open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play at Hawks Stadium Saturday.
With the victories, UMES snapped a 12 game losing streak.
Witte threw a seven-inning complete-game shutout in the first game for the Hawks (4-17, 2-0), a contest which saw eight different UMES players earn base hits and five finish with multiple- hit outings. Witte (1-1) struck out six and walked one for the win.
Zimmerman (2-3) started game two a little shaky before settling down on his way to the win. He went six innings, allowing three runs and six hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
Phil Vaughn (Clinton, Md.) and Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) each had three of the Hawks' nine hits in support of Zimmerman in game two, while Russel Deutschmann (Baden, Ontario) was 4-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs behind Witte.
Vaughn collected three more hits in game one, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and two RBIs. Chaikowsky, the designated hitter, was 5-of-6 with two runs and seven RBIs in the twinbill.
Up 3-0 after four innings of game one, the Hawks extended their lead with seven in the in the fifth off of Coppin state Starter Harry Williams (0-1). Vaughn led the inning off with a triple down the left-field line and was picked up by Josh Dunham (Des Moines, Iowa) with a single to right to make it 4-0. An Elliott Alston (Littleton, Colo.) sacrifice fly later in the frame pushed the lead to 5-0 before Chaikowsky plated two more with a two-out, two-RBI double to right-center field.
Remo Orsini (Elkton, Md.) gave UMES an eight-run lead with an RBI single, scoring Ben Vasko (San Diego, Calif.) and Vaughn, up for the second time in the inning, knocked in two more with a single to short.
UMES added two more in the sixth on consecutive RBI doubles by Deutschman and Alston before the game was halted in the seventh due to a conference-mandated 10-run rule.
Lonnel Bush was 2-for-3 for Coppin State (0-10, 0-2) in the first game with a pair of singles.
The Eagles 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Three straight singles produced a run by Kallen Fletcher, who started the rally with a one-out base knock. Bush then came in on a sacrifice fly to left from Jonathan Reynolds.
The Hawks responded with six in the second as they sent 11 men to the plate. Chaikowsky and Vaughn each tallied two-RBI hits, a double to center and single to left, respectively.
The lead was 7-2 when Orsini sent Franklin Armstrong (Trenton, N.J.) in from third on an RBI groundout.
UMES was held at bay into the sixth when it exploded for seven more runs. The inning was highlighted by another Chaikowsky double to center that scored Alston and Deutschmann to make it 12-0. Michael Guy's sacrifice fly to third base followed by Vaughn's RBI single to left center accounted for the final margin.
Bush (0-2) started the second game, taking the loss in two innings. Fletcher finished the last four and gave up eight runs on six hits, and five walks with a strikeout.
The Hawks and Eagles finish their three-game series Sunday at noon.
