PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team out-hit Temple University 12-11, but fell short as the Owls defeated the Fighting Hawks 11-6. UMES (3-17, 1-2) extended its losing streak to four-straight as Temple's (7-8) bullpen shut down the maroon and gray after they scored six runs over the first two innings.

UMES gave up four runs in the top of the first inning as Sean Davis allowed only two hits in the inning, though both were doubles. The Fighting Hawks rallied in the bottom of the first to score two on RBI-hit's from Brandon McCabe and Craig Munch.

In the second inning, UMES took the lead as they plated four runs on two hits. Munch provided the big blow as his two-out two-run single put the Hawks up 5-4 before the Owls walked in UMES's sixth run two batters later.

However, the Owls wasted no time taking control of the game as in the third they scored three runs on four consecutive singles to start the inning. Temple added some insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings and from that moment on the bullpens of both UMES and Temple cruised.

Mendek, McCafferty, Hamilton and Develin closed out the final seven and one-third innings giving up seven hits, but held the Fighting Hawks scoreless. Mendek went three and a third innings for his first victory of the season.

UMES turned to Rob Benak who had only pitched four and a third innings in three appearances so far this season. Benak went the final four and two-thirds innings without allowing a run or even a hit.

UMES will continue its home-stand that will see them play eight games in five days as they host Savannah State in back-to-back double-headers starting Wednesday at noon.
