Pasadena, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Baseball team (2-20-1, 0-5 MEAC) were swept in double header action, 13-12 & 10-1, by the Coppin State College Eagles (7-13, 3-2 MEAC) on Saturday. UMES led the first game, 12-5 heading into the ninth inning, but allowed eight Eagles runs in the bottom of the ninth to give CSC the win, 13-12. UMES kept adding runs, getting one run in the first, third, fifth, and ninth while tallying two runs in the second, fourth, sixth, and eight innings. They were only shut out in the seventh. Starter Sean Davis pitch the first eight innings allowing five runs, four earned, while striking out seven. He was relieved in the ninth by Derrick Casper who then allowed four earned runs and two walks and two hits. Before he could record an out, Graylon Kitchens came in and allowed four runs of his own. The loss overshadowed a great hitting day by the Hawks as Anthony Jackson went 3-4 with three runs and an RBI, Greg Cathell was 2-4 with three runs and a RBI, Butch Mills went 2-5 with a run and three RBIs, Graylon Kitchens was 2-4 with a run, and Bobby Shaw went 1-4 with a run and two RBIs. Mills and Shaw both collected their first home run of the season.
In game two the Hawks only managed one hit, which came in the first inning off the bat of Shaw who collected an RBI scoring Cathell. The Eagles committed five errors in the game but got strong pitching from Carroll who went the distance allowing one unearned run and recording three strike outs.
