SPARTANS OUTLAST UMES IN SERIES RUBBER MATCH
March 23, 2014
NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team dropped a 7-6 decision to Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon in the series’ rubber match at Marty Miller Field. UMES outhit NSU 13-7 in the game, but were unable to secure the victory in the final match of their second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series.
With the decision, UMES is now 4-14, 2-4 MEAC, while Norfolk State goes to 6-16, 3-3 MEAC.
With one away in the ninth, the Spartans used two consecutive doubles to tie the game at 6-6. The game appeared headed for extra innings, but NSU would capitalize on a pitching change to single in the winning run. The hit ended a great, hard fought series between the two teams over the past two days.
The two teams opened up the game scoreless through the first two innings, before UMES drew first blood with three in the third. Sophomore Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) walked to begin the frame and moved to third on two wild pitches. After senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) reached on a walk, freshman Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) drove Escanilla home with a single to right.
Junior Greg Turlik (Gaithersburg, Md.) sent Campbell home a few batters later on an RBI groundout, before sophomore Connor Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pa.) scored Dattilo with a double to make the score 3-0.
Sophomore Will Turley (Greensboro, Md.) stifled the Spartan bats for the first four innings and UME built its lead to 5-0 with two more runs in the fifth.
Norfolk State used three UMES errors to take a two-run lead and chase Turley from the match in the bottom of the fifth. Turley was replaced by junior Chipper Smith (Florence, S.C.), who ended the threat after his first hitter. The Hawks responded with one run in the sixth to take the lead, when Dattilo lined out to score senior Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.), who opened the inning with a single.
Smith was fantastic over the next two innings as he led UMES into the last inning with a 6-5 lead. It was in the bottom half of the ninth, however, where the NSU overtook the Hawks and raced to their sixth MEAC win of the year.
UMES was led by Escanilla, who was 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Breslin and junior Joshua James (Milford, Del.) each had two hits. Breslin had two doubles and three other Hawks stole bases. Smith (0-4) was saddled with the loss after going 3.2 innings and allowing two earned runs. Turley pitched well for UMES to start as he allowed just one earned run in 4.2 innings against the Spartans.
The Hawks will stay on the road for their next contest when they travel to Towson to take on the Tigers on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. The match is the first of four for UMES on the week as they are set to host Delaware State for a three-game set next weekend at Hawk Stadium.
