HANOVER, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team (6-17-1, 3-3 MEAC) dropped a pair to Coppin State University Eagles, 8-4 and 4-1 in a nightcap Sunday at Joe Cannon Stadium. Junior Eric Gaines led the Fighting Hawks in the twinbill as he went 5-9 while recording a run, a pair of RBI, and stealing two bases. Ronald Quick stole five bases on five attempts while adding a pair of hits. Freshman Brandon Records went 1-3 and recorded two RBI. UMES took their only lead of the day by crossing a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Bernie Stratchko led off with a single through the right side followed by a stolen base. Quick would reach on a fielders' choice advancing Stratchko to third. Quick would steal second and Anthony Jackson would walk to load the bases. Pete Mayta plated Stratchko with a sacrifice fly. Gaines singled to leftfield scoring Quick. Coppin State registered their highest offensive inning of the afternoon with four runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 5-2. Ryan Deakyne drove in a pair of runs with a triple through the right side. He scored when Corey Greene reached on an error and Greene scored on a double by Matt Mansfield who was called out going to third. The Eagles tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Records drove in a pair of runs for the Hawks in the seventh with a single before Jesus Melendez entered the contest for the Eagles and pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Jason Janeski (2-5) took the loss for UMES as he pitched 4.1 innings allowing seven runs on six hits. The Fighting Hawks received 3.2 innings of relief from Jamar Cadejuste with the lefty allowing only one run and striking out seven. Matt Bellon (2-3) earned the victory for CSU in game one after allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out seven in seven innings pitched. During the nightcap, both teams opened with scoreless first and second innings. Coppin State hit the board first with three runs in the third inning. Both teams exchanged runs in the fifth as Gaines singled to score Jackson who tripled to left. CSU's final run came from centerfielder Amiel Traynum who led off with a single and scored on a triple by Deakyne. Jackson went 1-3 in game two scoring the only run for UMES. Ken Richardson pitched all six innings for the Hawks to fall to 1-2 on the year. Bill Auch (2-3) received the win for the Eagles by pitching a complete seven inning game, allowing only one run and striking out three. UMES continues on the road as they head to Morgantown, West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers in a three game series on Monday, March 27, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. The series will wrap up on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. |
