March 29, 2004 Ambler, PA - Temple senior Al Roach was the star of the game as the leftfielder hit two grand slam home runs in the Owls 19-1 win over the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on a very chilly afternoon at Temple's Ambler Field. It was the first time any player in Temple head coach Skip Wilson's 45-year tenure hit two grand slams in one game. Roach was joined in the home run hit parade by rightfielder Pete Colon, who became the first ever to hit a home run at the new complex. Colon led off the second inning with a long blast to left off Hawk starter and loser Dereck Casper (0-9). The Owls pounded out 17 hits as Jason Connor also continued his hot hitting with four hits on the afternoon. The Owls (11-7) received another steller pitching performance, this one coming from starter Tim Brown (1-0). The right hander pitched five shoutout innings allowing just two hits. Brown no-hit the Hawks (2-30-1) until Anthony Jackson led off the fifth with an infield single. The first Roach grand slam came in the fourth inning following three walks. His second grand slam, a monster shot over the left field wall, capped a six-run sixth that put the Owls up 17-1. With the big lead, head coach Skip Wilson went to his bench and the back ups made the most of their opportunity. Catcher Matt Lafferty doubled in a run in the Owls six-run sixth inning while Mike Silverman added a single in two trips to the plate. Reliever Jonathan Stripling worked a scoreless ninth inning for Temple while Chris Hamilton pitched three innings allowing just one run.
That run came off of the bat of Bobby Shaw in the sixth inning, scoring Rob Benak. Shaw, Cathell, Jackson, Butch Mills, Pete Mayta, and Donnell Queen all recorded one hit apiece in the contest.
The Hawks now travel to Daytona Beach, FL to take on the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman College. Portions of this release taken from the official Temple Sports Information release. |
