PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (6-26, 1-11) split a double-header with Savannah State University (15-9) on Thursday afternoon winning the first game 13-9 behind Craig Munch's two homeruns and seven RBI's. The Fighting Hawks dropped the game two to the Tigers, who are the #1 ranked team in the Black College Baseball poll, 3-1

In game one, UMES fell behind 4-0 as the Tigers recorded only two hits, but two defensive errors, two walks and a hit-by-pitch gave Savannah State the early lead. The Fighting Hawks responded with a run in the bottom of the first as Craig Munch's sacrifice fly to right scored Pete Mayta. Then in the second, Ronald Quick extended his hitting streak to six games with an RBI-single to center.

Savannah extended its lead to 6-2 in the top of the third, but UMES answered with three in the bottom of the inning as the Fighting Hawks collected four hits. Munch doubled home two runs and then Greg Cathell singled him home.

The Tigers and the Fighting Hawks exchanged solo-homeruns in the fourth and fifth innings. Gerald Smith put SSU up 7-5 with his blast, but Brandon McCabe answered with his sixth homerun of the season.

Trailing 7-6 in the seventh, SSU added another run as Gerald Smith once again went deep to right for his seventh of the year.

The maroon and gray responded, as McCabe doubled home Mayta and then the first pitch reliever Javier Fialla threw was sent over the right field wall by Munch giving the Fighting Hawks a 9-8 lead.

In the top of the eighth, Savannah State tied the game at 9-9, but left three runners stranded as Brad Powell relieved Sean Davis and did not allow the Tigers to reclaim the lead. Powell's effort paid off as Joel Maher doubled in Quick for the 10-9 lead and then Munch again took the first pitch from Fialla over the opposite field fence for a three run homerun.

Dusty Webster secured Powell's first collegiate win by retiring the side in the ninth as the Hawks took game one of the double-header. Munch went 3-4 with two homeruns, three runs scored and a career-high seven RBI's. McCabe equaled the effort going 4-4 with a homerun and a double. He scored four times and drove in two.

In game two, the Hawks earned an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Maher led off the game with a double and eventually scored on a ground out by McCabe. The Tigers answered with three runs in the top of the second highlighted by RBI-singles from George Pope and Calvin Hart.

With the score 3-1, both teams pitching took control as Jason Janeski cruised through the next four innings without giving up a run. It was the seventh straight quality start for Janeski, but he falls to 0-7 on the season.

Jeremiah Fielder went three innings for the victory allowing just the one run on four hits, while striking out three. Sean Griffin replaced Fielder and went the final four innings for the save as he allowed only two hits, while striking out four.

UMES will continue its home stand this weekend as they welcome Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Florida A&M to Princess Anne for three games. The double-header on Saturday, April 9th will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the final game on Sunday will start at noon.
