April 9, 2005 PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (6-28, 1-13) dropped a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference double-header to Florida A&M University (10-28, 5-6) as they lost 5-1 in game one and were shutout in game two 4-0. In the second game of the double-header, FAMU took a early 1-0 lead as Virgil Priestly drove in an unearned run with a single through the middle of the infield. UMES starter Bernie Stratchko pitched in his longest and best appearance of the season as he allowed only the one unearned run on four hits over five innings. In the bottom of the fourth the Fighting Hawks had two on and only one out, but could not get a runner in as they left eight runners on base over the first four innings. In the fifth, Justin Hoban got himself to second with two-outs, but Jamil Knight's seventh strikeout in three plus innings of relief ended another two-out threat. In the sixth, FAMU got a two-out double by Priestly that scored the teams second run off of Stratchko and then an RBI-triple by Dan Flaherty. Corey McFadden knocked Stratchko from the game with the Rattlers third consecutive two-out hit giving them a 4-0 lead. Knight closed out the game allowing just one hit in the final two innings, while recording his eighth strikeouts. He went five and two-thirds innings for the victory, while Stratchko received credit for the loss despite giving up only three earned runs over five and two-thirds. In game one, the Fighting Hawks received a solid pitching performance from starter Ken Richardson (1-6), who went five innings giving up three runs while striking out five. Richardson gave up single runs in the first, second and sixth innings in the loss.
In the first inning FAMU scored on a sacrifice fly by Priestly and then in the second Kevin Clethen singled home McFadden. In the sixth inning, Richardson was chased from the game as the Rattlers received a lead-off double from Brian Braxton, who came around to score on Elvin Millan's RBI-single.
UMES scored a single run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Craig Munch and then threatened in the fourth as they loaded the bases on a single and two walks. However, the Fighting Hawks could not get much else going against Michael Tavernier dominated the Hawks hitters. Tavernier (5-5) threw a complete game allowing only one run on three hits. He struck out 14 batters, while walking only three. He began the game getting the teams first six outs via the strikeout. UMES will close out the three-game series with Florida A&M on Sunday with a single nine-innings game starting at 1:00 p.m. |
