Norfolk, Va. - Eric Gaines was 3-3 with a triple in a rained-out game at Marty L. Miller field. The Hawks, who fall to 3-4 in MEAC play, hope to get back on the plus side in MEAC standings when they take on the same Spartan team in a double header tomorrow. The following release appears compliments of Norfolk State University Media Relations. Moriba George (St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.) drove in three runs and Rocco Savage (Tampa, Fla.) was 2-for-4 to help Norfolk State to an 8-5, rain-shortened win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field. Play was halted in the sixth inning due to inclement weather. The teams will finish their three-game series with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday. The Spartans (16-16 overall, 6-1 MEAC), who scored in every inning, jumped out to a comfortable early lead and held on to win their fourth straight and for the eighth time in 10 games. NSU led 4-0 after two innings, and starter De'Mece Williams (Newberry, S.C.) held on to improve to 5-3 on the season. Juan Serrano (Naugatuck, Conn.) had a two-out RBI single in the first. NSU then scored three runs in the second. Alfred Profeet (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled with one out and scored on an RBI triple by Ryan Reddick (Raleigh, N.C.). Charles LaLane (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Ernie Banks (Chesapeake, Va.) followed with RBI singles to give the Spartans a 4-0 cushion. UMES (6-22-1, 3-4) got two runs in the third on an RBI triple by Eric Gaines (3-for-3) and an RBI bunt single by Joel Maher. Profeet's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning put NSU back in the lead by three, 5-2. The Hawks again drew within two, 5-3, on Pete Mayta's run-scoring single in the fourth, but George answered with a two-run, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the frame.
UMES took advantage of a two-out NSU error to plate two runs in the fifth. Ronald Quick had a two-out RBI double, and Bernie Stratchko scored on a passed ball to cut NSU's lead to 7-5. George was credited with an RBI on the game's final run by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth. UMES had once more chance before the heavy rains came. They loaded the bases on two walks and an infield hit by Pete Mayta in the top of the sixth, but Williams got Maher to ground into an inning-ending double play. Williams scattered nine hits in six innings. He gave up five runs, three earned. Jason Janeski (2-6) took the loss after yielding five hits and four runs in an inning and a third. Four Hawks' pitchers combined to issue 11 walks. |
