Aberdeen, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks didn't get much rest the night before they traveled to Aberdeen, MD to play the Terrapins of the University of Maryland. They got in the night before from a trip to Daytona Beach, FL against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. That quick turnaround didn't hurt UMES much as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two before falling 10-6. Due to field conditions at Shipley Field in College Park the Hawks got a treat, playing a Cal Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen. UMES enjoyed the conditions, especially in game two as they took a three nothing lead in the first inning. The inning started on a Greg Cathell single to center. He was thrown out stealing but Leon Tilghman kept up the Hawks, singling to the shortstop. Bobby Shaw followed with a walk and UMES was in business with runners on first and second. The clutch hitting Rob Benak stepped in and doubled down the left field line. That scored Tilghman and pushed Shaw to third. Butch Mills stepped in and grounded out, but the solid base running scored Shaw and put Benak on third. Pete Mayta knocked in the third run singling up the middle to give UMES their fourth hit and third run of the inning.
The Hawks added another run in the third. Shaw walked again but was out at second when Benak hit into a fielder's choice. Butch Mills collected his second hit of the day with a single that moved Benak to third after he went to second on an error. Mayta's second RBI of the day came on a fielder's choice scoring Benak, but getting Mills out on the play. The inning ended when Donnell Queen flied out to left.
With the Hawks leading 4-0 the Terrapins bats got hot in the fourth as they tied the game plating four runs of their own. Three came off the bat of Truan Mehl who homered to right. The Terps added two runs in each of the fifth and eighth innings and one apiece in the sixth and seventh innings. UMES got two back in the seventh inning with back to back singles to centerfield by Joel Maher and Cathell. A wild pitch from reliever Casey Baron moved Cathell to second and scored Maher. The Hawks got the other run from Cathell when Benak tripled to center for an RBI. Dan Waters got the win for the Terps and Graylon Kitchens the loss throwing six and two thirds innings and allowing eight runs. The Hawks never got the bats going in game one, falling 9-1. The lone run came in the seventh inning when Bobby Shaw singled through the middle, scoring Maher who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. In that game UMES had eight hits with Sean Davis taking the loss throwing four and one third innings, allowing nine runs, six earned. The Hawks take a much needed few days off, hosting the Eagles of Coppin State College on the 15th of April. |
