Daytona Beach, FL - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks headed south for the spring to take on the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman College on April 3-4 in a three game series. The Hawks hung tough in games one and two, losing both by a score of 5-0. UMES hoped to get the best of the defending MEAC Champions in the third game but allowed the high powered Wildcat offense to post 20 runs to their nine. In game one the Hawks mustered only five hits on winning pitcher Rivera. Peter Mayta, Greg Cathell, Rob Benak, Butch Mills, and Graylon Kitchens all had one hit each. Leon Tilghman took the loss in eight innings of work allowing five runs, four earned, and one walk. On the second day game two of the series saw an identical result with UMES only mustering three hits. Those came off the bat of Benak, Mayta, and Joel Maher. Sean Davis took the loss in six innings of work, allowing five runs, four earned, three walks, and striking out three. The bats came to life in game three as UMES got on the board for nine runs on ten hits and one Wildcat error. Kitchens took the loss getting out to a rough start in ne and one third innings. He allowed nine runs, eight earned, with two walks.
UMES got off to a good start taking a 2-0 lead in the first. Cathell led off the inning with a singe to left. A Tilghman walk moved him over. Benak hit into a fielder's choice that forced Cathell out at third. A wild pitch then forced Tilghman to third and Benak with second with two outs. Another wild pitch then scored Tilghman and put Benak on third. Anthony Jackson then walked. He was caught stealing but not before Beank crossed the plate to give them a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks added four in the seventh as Dereck Casper then pinch hit for Jackson and singled to left. Mills then walked and put runners on first and second. A Mayta single then loaded the bases with no outs. Andrew Frey pinch hit for Donnell Queen and was hit by a pitch, picking up an easy RBI. A Maher single to center then scored the second run as Mills scored. Mayta got out on the play. A passed ball put Frey on third and a wild pitch then pushed Frey across the plate and Maher to third. Cathell then walked and stole second as Maher scored. UMES got one in the eighth in two in the ninth for their ninth run of the game. In the eighth Casper again singled and then scored when Mayta reached on a fielder's choice. In the final inning a Beank triple scored Cathell who walked in the inning. Benak then crossed the plate on a Bobby Shaw double. The wildcats scored three in the first, nine in the second, three in the fourth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth. They got a home run from Irvine in the eighth and triples from Turmero, Roberts and R. Rodriguez. The Hawks do not have much time off as they travel to play the University of Maryland on Tuesday. |
