Princess Anne, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team (8-24-1, 5-6 MEAC) split in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader today against North Carolina A&T. The Hawks slid pass the Aggies in game one 7-6, but came up short dropping game two, 6-2. Down 6-5 in the top of the eighth of game one, freshman Mike Roberts (1-2) took the mound and grabbed his first conference win for UMES.

The Hawks tied up the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second. In the third inning the Aggies would score another run while the Hawks added two more to stay ahead 3-2. At the top of the fourth Michael Willey came in for Kevin Hillenburg who allowed three hits and walked four batters.

UMES would take their largest lead of the game in the fourth inning. Pete Mayta led off the inning with a single up the middle then advanced to second on an error by second baseman Raul Santiago. Eric Gaines followed with a triple to right field that would plate Mayta. Gaines would also score on a ground out to the first baseman by Greg Cathell.

North Carolina A&T would score a single run in each of the next three innings. With the Aggies up 6-5 the Hawks brought in Roberts in the top of the eighth.

Anthony Jackson led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to second. Mayta tripled to right field to score Jackson. Joel Maher would then single through the right side to plate Mayta. Maher would then steal second and advance to third on a sac bunt from Cathell. A groundout from Justin Hoban would end the inning.

 

 

Mayta led the way for the Fighting Hawks as he went 2-3 including a triple, while plating two runs and recording an RBI. Jackson went 2-4 scoring two runs and recording three stolen bases.

Michael Hauff (4-3) recorded the loss for the Aggies as he pitched eight innings allowing seven runs, all earned, on ten hits, walking three batters.

Game two started like the first as both teams exchanged runs in the first inning. North Carolina A&T would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Both teams would not plate another run over the next four innings.

In the top of the fifth the Aggies would plate three more runs on two hits and one Hawk error. They would add one more run in the top of seventh to increase their lead 6-1. In a last attempt effort, Ronald Quick tripled to right field to start the bottom of the seventh. A groundout by Mike DiCarlo would score Quick. Jackson and Mayta would both strike out swinging to end the inning.

Dustin Longchamps (4-4) took the loss for the Hawks as he pitched all seven innings allowing six runs (two of them earned) on seven hits.

Maher and Quick led the way for the Hawks in game two as they both went 2-3 including a triple, while scoring one run.

John Primus (3-5) registered the win for North Carolina A&T as he pitched all seven innings giving up just five hits and striking out eight batters.

The Fighting Hawks return to Hawk Stadium to take on North Carolina A&T Aggies in game three of the series Sunday, April 16, 2006 at noon.
