PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball program (8-25-1, 5-7 MEAC) lost their final home game of the season today to Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponent North Carolina A&T (15-25, 3-9 MEAC), 12-6. This game will mark the final contest for seven seniors Bernie Stratchko, Pete Mayta, Greg Cathell, Joel Maher, Morgan Schirmer, Ronald Quick and Anthony Jackson. Jackson led the way for the Hawks as he went 2-for-4 scoring two runs. Eric Gaines went 2-for-4 including a triple, recording an RBI. Third baseman Charlie Gamble went 3-for-3 for A&T including a homerun and a triple, while recording three runs and two RBI. The Aggies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out, left fielder Joe McIntyre hit a two-run round tripper to right field followed by a triple from Gamble. A single through the right side from pitcher Patrick Oates would plate Gamble. In the top of third, with Brad Powell taking the mound for Matt Russell, N.C. A&T would plate four more runs on three hits including a three-run homer from Gamble. With two outs in the bottom of the third Maher got on with a single to the shortstop. Cathell then singled up the middle followed by an infield single from Justin Hoban which plated Maher. A single to right field from Stratchko would score Cathell and advance Hoban to second. Quick would follow with a strikeout to end the inning.
Trailing 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth, UMES surrendered one more run on two hits. Schirmer led off with a single to left field and would advance to second on a passed ball. Both Jackson and Mayta would walk to load the bases. Gaines would get hit earning an RBI for plating Schirmer. A sacrifice fly from to center field from Maher would score Jackson. In the seventh inning, Ken Richardson replaced Powell quickly retiring the first two batters. Phillip Brewington hit a shot up the middle but would be left stranded as shortstop Nick Mayo grounded out to Richardson. In the bottom of the seventh Quick led off with a double to right field. With one out, Jackson would single to the shortstop and then advance to second on an error from Mayo. Gaines would reach and advance to second on an error from Aggie catcher Neil Rosser, scoring Quick and Jackson. A ground out from Maher would end the inning. With the score close at 6-9, both teams would not plate a run in the eighth. In the ninth, N.C. A&T would seal their win as they plated three more runs on four hits. Russell (0-1) took the loss for the Hawks as he pitched two innings giving up five runs (all earned) on four hits while walking three batters and striking out one. Oates (3-4) got the win for the Aggies as he pitched five innings giving up just two runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters. UMES will hit the road next for an 11-day trip starting in Emmittsburg, Maryland at Mount Saint Mary's University on April 20, 2006 beginning at 1:00 pm. The road stint will conclude in Daytona Beach Florida as the Fighting Hawks take on the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman College on April 29, 2006. |
