April 20, 2006 Emmitsburg, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) split a doubleheader with host Mt. Saint Mary's on Thursday afternoon. They dropped game one 7-4 but rebounded to take game two 5-4 behind a complete game, 135 pitch outing by Dustin Longchamps. Eric Gaines picked up four hits on the day to pace the Hawk offense. The Mount St. Mary's baseball team split a doubleheader with Maryland-Eastern Shore Thursday afternoon at Golibart Field on campus. The Mount took the opening game, 7-4, before UMES rebounded to take game two, 5-4. Mount St. Mary's senior Joe Kotula homered in each game to pace the Mount attack. In the opening game, the Mount (15-18) pounded out 16 hits en route to the 7-4 victory. Stephan Fay led the way with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate while Joe Kotula was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI for the Mount. UMES (9-26-1) grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Mount St. Mary's answered with a pair of its own in the bottom of the innning when Fay and Kotula recorded back-to-back RBI doubles. The Mount took a 4-2 lead in the fifth when Kotula belted a two-run homer to right. The Hawks responded with two runs in the sixth on a two-run single up the middle by Eric Gaines. Mount St. Mary's regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Josh Vittek blasted a two-run shot to right field, his team-leading fifth home run of the season. Matt Eiden's RBI suicide squeeze in the seventh rounded out the scoring. Jim Serafin pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for the Mount while Bucky Kosyk pitched the final two innings to earn his Northeast Conference leading eighth save of the year. Starter Jimmy Mudgett allowed four runs and struck out six in 5.2 innings in his first collegiate start.
Gaines went 2-for-5 with two RBI and Justin Hoban added two hits in the loss for UMES. Mike Gioioso, Ryan Murray and Eiden each had two hits in the victory. The Hawks responded with a 5-4 win in the second game. UMES scored three times in the top of the sixth to break open a 2-2 game. Eric Gaines singled to left field with the bases loaded to score to runs and give UMES a 4-2 lead. The Hawks added an unearned run later in the inning for a three-run advantage. Kotula got the Mount within 5-4 when he drove a 2-0 pitch over the left-center field fence for a two-run homer, his second of the day. In the seventh, the Mount had the tying run on second with two out, but starting pitcher Dustin Longchamps struck out the final batter to seal the win. Longchamps (5-4) struck out 11 in a 135-pitch complete game to earn the win. Craig Henson allowed a pair of unearned runs in five innings in a no-decision for the Mount. Josh Vittek was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI while Kotula was 1-for-2 with his two-run homer in the loss. Gaines was 2-for-4 to pace the UMES offense in game two. |
