CHAIKOWSKY, FOREMAN LEAD UMES OVER FLORIDA A&M, 10-7

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) batted 3-for-4 with triple and three RBI and Jacob Foreman (Little Orleans, Md.) pitched eight strong innings as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team defeated Florida A&M, 10-7, at Hawks Stadium on Friday.
UMES (6-31, 4-8 MEAC) banged out a game-high 14 hits, scoring six runs in the second inning to take the lead good and handed Florida A&M (14-29, 3-7) its third loss in four games.
Foreman (2-7) allowed eight hits and seven runs (three earned) with eight strikeouts and no walks for the win. He surrendered just one run in his final six frames on a Reginald Grant RBI groundout in the fourth and Karim Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico) worked a scoreless ninth inning for his first save of the season.
Chaikowsky collected his MEAC-leading eighth triple of the season, scoring two runs in the Hawks' six-run sixth inning. He also scored three runs, stole a base and walked.
Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.) also finished with three hits and an RBI as five UMES players recorded multiple-hit outings.
Grant paced the FAMU offense, going 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and three driven in.
Cory Franklin put the Rattlers on the scoreboard in the first with a sacrifice fly with in the opening inning that plated Toby Adeyemi after he doubled. The Rattlers made it 2-0 when Jimmie Terrell singled to shortstop and Grant, who reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, scored on the first of seven UMES errors.
The game featured 14 errors, seven per side.
UMES took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) reached on a throwing error by Grant at shortstop and James Newsome (Mechancsville, Md.) followed with a single and stole second. With runners on second and third, Chaikowsky reached on the second of four Rattler errors in the frame.
He then stole second, advanced to third when the throw went into center field and scored on another overthrow by the Adam Decker for a 3-2 lead.
Florida A&M came back with four runs in the top of the second, Adeyemi singled up the middle to tie the game with one out, scoring Justin Abney from third and Grant followed a with a two run-double down the right-field line to make it 5-3. Franklin struck out but with two gone, Jarryd Reid singled to score Grant for a three run lead,
The fireworks continued in the bottom of the second. UMES pushed six runs across on six hits and three errors to earned a 9-6 advantage.
Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) singled through the left side and advanced to second on Adeyemi's throwing error in left to lead off the inning. After Johns walked, Newsome singled to right and advanced on a throwing error by Reid in right field to score Bull.
Chaikowsky, who came into the week tied for second in the NCAA in triples, then shot one down the left-field line to tie the game at 6-all.Mena and Bull added run-scoring hits and Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) scored on an error later in the inning for a three-run lead.
Foreman settled down from there, holding the Rattlers to the fourth inning run.
Heath Blackburn (1-7) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 11 hits and nine runs (six earned) for the loss. He walked three and struck out five.
The teams close the series with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
