April 26, 2006 Tallahassee, Fl. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team defeated Florida A&M University (11-26 4-6 MEAC) yesterday in game one of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) three game series. Morgan Schirmer led the way for the maroon and gray, going 2-for-three including the game-winning double, while recording two RBI and plating a run. UMES (12-27-1, 6-7 MEAC) jumped on the board first in the top of the second with a triple to right center from Ronald Quick. Quick would be caught in a rundown and picked off by FAMU starter Ciril Manego. Schirmer, Pete Mayta and Joel Maher would draw three consecutive walks. With two outs, Schirmer would score on a wild pitch. Greg Cathell would end the inning with a fly-out to left field. The Rattlers would counter by plating two runs on two hits in the bottom of third. They would then score another run in the top of the fourth. Also in the fourth the Hawks would call sophomore Brad Powell to the mound for junior starter Jason Janeski. Down 1-3 in the top of the sixth, Mayta would lead off with a triple to center field. Mayta would score on a sacrifice fly by Eric Gaines. Maher followed with a single up the middle but would be thrown out at second as Cathell would reach on a fielders' choice. Hoban singled to centerfield but was picked off but not before scoring Cathell.
With the score tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh, UMES regained the lead by plating two runs on two hits. Anthony Jackson singled to right field and was joined on the base paths by Quick who reached via hit-by-pitch. Schirmer doubled to center crossing both Jackson and Quick. The Rattlers would plate their final run on one hit in the bottom of the seventh. Leading 5-4, Mike Roberts (2-2) would come in to relieve Brad Powell in the bottom of seventh to hold FAMU and keep the lead. Roberts recorded his fifth save of the season as he pitched the last three innings giving up no hits or runs and striking out four. Powell (1-0) recorded his first win of the season going two and two-thirds innings allowing one earned run on three hits, while walking one. Manego (2-2) took the loss for the Rattlers as he pitched six and one-third innings giving five runs, all earned on ten hits, while walking six. Third baseman Allen DeCambra led the way for FAMU going an impressive 4-for-5 and recording an RBI. The Fighting Hawks will take on the same Rattlers squad today in game two of the series beginning at 6:00 pm. |
