PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Hawk offense of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) only managed one run as they were unable to string hits together and fell in both ends of a double header at Hawks Stadium. Bethune-Cookman University (BC-U) took game one 8-0 and game two in five innings, 12-1. The Wildcats posted 22 hits on the day to the Hawk's 15.

BC-U (23-22, 12-1 MEAC), the top seeded team in the Black College Baseball poll, used solid pitching from Francisco Rodriguez (7-3) in game one and Dustin Blackwell (6-4) in game two, both of whom picked up the win, to shut down the UMES bats.

In game two, which was called after five innings due to the ten-run rule, the Hawks plated their lone run in the third inning. Kevin Hillenburg led-off with a walk and went to second on a Derrick Baker single through the right side. After a doubled play put up two outs, Eric Gaines singled to left and picked up the only UMES RBI on the day, plating Hillenburg.

In the game, UMES (9-35, 5-12 MEAC) only managed five hits. Justin Hoban had a single in the second while Hillenburg singled in the fifth and Ken Richardson had an infield single in the same inning.

BC-U used a six run first inning, jumping on starter Mike Roberts, to take command. Roberts would get the loss (2-9), as they added five in the fourth and one in the second. Angel Mercado was two across the board in the game with a 2-2 appearance and two runs and two RBI. Alejandro Jimenez was 2-4 with a pair of runs and a pair of RBI while Jose Ortizx-Rivera was 2-3 with a run. Angel Negron and Chris Henault both had two RBI in the game.

In game one UMES posted eight hits, but never managed to string them together for a run. Their best chance was in the ninth when Joel Gonzalez doubled down the left field line to start the frame and went to third on a Hoban double to right. With no outs UMES could not plate a run. Both Gonzalez and Hoban were 2-4 in the game.

The Wildcats again jumped out in the opening frame, getting to starter Dustin Longchamps for three runs. He would take the loss to go to 3-9, allowing seven earned runs and six walks. He struck out six Wildcats.

Richardson was 2-2 in game one while Gaines and Tyler Love accounted for the other Hawk hits.

Mercado went 3-3 in game one with four RBI and two runs. He homered to left in the opening inning. Luis Gonzalez and Ortiz-Rivera both had a pair of hits on the day while Drew Clark tallied a pair of RBI on a 1-3 day.

The same two teams meet tomorrow at 1:00 pm in Hawks Stadium. Tomorrow is the final home game for the Hawks of the 2007 season and is senior day. Join UMES early for special senior presentations. Admission if free.
