Box Score

Lake Buena Vista, FL - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks (3-43-1, 0-18 MEAC) fell in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament to the tough hitting Hornets of Delaware State University (22-20) by a score of 21-0.

UMES never really got the bats going today collecting only six hits off the pitching combination of Nick Bitter and Matt Keen. Greg Cathell went 2-3 on the day for UMES while Leon Tilghman, Bobby Shaw, Rob Benak, and Graylon Kitchens each went one for three on the day.

That wasn't the case for Delaware State as they went through four Hawk pitchers on route to 19 hits and 1 run and taking advantage of three UMES errors.

The Hornets started the first inning off with a bang, taking a 3-0 lead. Garrett Weir opened the game reaching on an error at shortstop. After stealing second he tried to score on a Norris Gordon single but was thrown out at home by centerfielder Joel Maher. After two walks loaded the bases, Justin Wenger reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Gordon. A Brandon Gravely double to center then plated Wenger and DSU had the three run advantage.

They added one in the second inning when Garrett Weir singled through the right side, scoring Kevin Hill who reached on single to start the inning.

Delaware State then scored nine in the third, three in the fifth, and five in the sixth to force the game to end early after six and half innings.

Gravely went 4-5 on the day with two runs and five RBIs.

Kelly Williams (2-4) collected a pair of hits and scored three times. Bret Underwood (2-3) added three runs and two RBI while Wenger was 2-4 with four RBI and three runs. Hill went 2-5 with a pair of runs scored.

C.J. Acker, Matt Folke, Duben Word, Jason Rust, Norris Gordon, Kyle Williams, and Weir all had one hit on the day.

Bitter recorded the win to improve to 5-4 on the season while Sean Davis took the loss for the Hawks, falling to 1-11.

Delaware State advances to play Florida A & M in the winner's bracket tomorrow at 10:00 AM while the University of Maryland Eastern Shore falls to the consolation bracket to take on the Eagles of Coppin State College, also at 10:00 AM.
