HAWKS BOW OUT OF MEAC TOURNAMENT, FALL 3-2 TO COPPIN STATE

Lake Buena Vista, FL - Coppin State's offense was virtually non-existent through seven innings, until Corey Greene hit a two-run shot over the right field fence in the bottom of the eighth, to give the No. 6 Eagles a 3-2 come from behind victory over No. 7 Maryland Eastern Shore, in a losers bracket game of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
With the win, Coppin advanced to face No. 5 Norfolk State at 2 p.m. Maryland Eastern Shore, who ended the season 3-44-1, was eliminated from the tournament.
Coppin State (17-31) tied the score at 1-1 on a two-out single by Teon Richburg, which scored Greg Fleet.
Neither team threatened until UMES reclaimed the lead (2-1) in the sixth inning when Rob Benak scored on a throwing error by Coppin starting pitcher Tommy Stratchko. Benak, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, scored when Stratchko fielded a bunt by Pete Mayta and overthrew catcher Carlos D'Costa, allowing Benak to score.
The Eagles finally woke up in the eighth to take their first lead of the game. Senior Chris Brown doubled off the left field fence with one out and Greene followed with his fourth homer of the season to give the Eagles the win.
Coppin relief pitcher Nathan Penrose was awarded the victory, improving his record to 3-1 on the season. Penrose, who came in the eighth inning with two outs, set the school's single season record for appearances with 22. He finished the game with two strikeouts and surrendered a run in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Offensively the Eagles were led by Greene, who went 3-for-4 with a run and a game-high two RBIs. Greg Fleet and Teon Richburg each added two hits. Coppin finished the game with 10 hits and an error.
Leon Tilghman, who pitched a complete game for the Hawks, had three strikeouts and fell to 0-12 on the season with the loss. Jackson recorded two of Maryland Eastern Shore's eight hits to lead the team.
