COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) took a 2-2 tie into the sixth inning but fell to in-state rival the University of Maryland 7-2 in a nightcap on May 2, 2007. The Hawks pounded out six hits and took advantage of three Terrapin errors to keep the game close. Hawk freshman Tyler Winch took the hill for UMES, throwing seven innings and allowing seven hits and four runs. He surrendered just two walks. Winch gave up tow runs to Maryland in the third inning. He had the Terps down, with two outs, but a hit batter, a walk, a wild pitch and then a single plated two Terrapins. UMES got one run in the fourth to cut the lead in half. The Hawks took advantage of a pitching change in the inning. With two outs Justin Hoban reached on an error by the second baseman that allowed him to wind up on second. Josh Dean then singled to the second baseman and Hoban was safe at home after the first baseman committed a throwing error. The Hawks then tied the game in the very next inning. With one out Derrick Baker reached on a bunt single and went to second on a Ken Richardson ground out. A passed ball by a new catcher moved baker to third and Eric Gaines singled to right to plate Baker. The Hawks took the tie into the sixth inning. They again got through two Maryland batters before surrendering the go ahead run as Spessard scored on a Greenberg single up the middle. Maryland scored a lone run again in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. The Terps then added three runs in the eighth inning off of Mike Roberts who came in to work the final inning. Two of those three were earned.
Dean and Baker both collected a pair of hits on the day with Gaines and Hoban recording the others. Dan Melvin and Dan Benick both had a pair of RBI in the game. UMES heads to Navy this weekend for what is now scheduled for a three game series beginning with a double header on Saturday at 1:00 pm. |
