ARLINGTON, Va. - Behind strong pitching from Chris Neary and Brian Frazier, the game one and game two starters, respectively, George Washington swept a doubleheader against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Wednesday afternoon at Barcroft Park. GW took game one, 7-2, and then won the nightcap, 4-1. Both games were seven inning contests. The twin bill was required when Tuesday's game, originally scheduled on the campus on UMES, was postponed due to rain. In the opening game, GW (22-23) and UMES (5-41) went back and forth and were tied 2-2 after three innings of play before the Colonials seized control with five unanswered runs over the course of the final four innings. GW took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth with two outs when Tom Zebroski drove in two runs with a double to the fence in right-center. GW had originally taken the lead with a Curtis Eward two-RBI double down the left-field line in the bottom of the first inning. The Hawks started with the lead. Remo Orsini reached on a one out error and then quickly went to second on a failed pick off from the pitcher that went wide of the bag. Josh Dunham doubled to left and plated Orsini for the one run lead. After GW scored twice in the first UMES tied the game in the third. Phillip Vaughn led-off with a single through the left side. The pick-off attempt was again wide of first and the quick-footed Vaughn scampered to second. Orsini then drew a walk, and after a pop-out Vaughn and Orsini pilled off a double steal to get both in scoring position. A Jorge Pichardo fly out to center plated Vaughn for the sacrifice fly. Matt Witte then singled to move Orsini to third and Tyler Love drew a walk to load the bases. The Hawks looked in good shape but a ground out would end the inning.
Junior LHP Neary, who allowed just one earned run and scattered seven hits in six innings pitched, held UMES in check. Sophomore RHP Faizan Choudhry worked a perfect seventh inning to preserve the 7-2 GW victory. Dan Sterling would take the loss allowing six runs, five earned in five innings of work. The strong GW pitching continued in day's second game, as Frazier worked a complete game in his first start of the season, holding UMES to just four hits and one unearned run. He struck out three and faced just five batters more than the minimum. Offensively, GW relied on the long-ball in game two. Andrew Haberern led-ff the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run, his third of the season, to give GW a 1-0 lead. After UMES pushed across an unearned run in the top of the fourth to tie the game, Gavin Swanson hit a two-run homer (7) in the bottom of the frame, staking the Colonials to a 3-1 advantage. GW added their final run in the sixth on a Will Cooper RBI-single. The Hawks plated their lone run in the fourth inning. Pichardo led-off the frame with a single to center and went to second on an error by the pitcher. After a Pat Hercinger single, Pichardo would score on a Russel Deutschmann ground out. Witte worked a solid six innings, allowing four earned, a walk and four Ks. Vaughn and Deutschmann would also collect hits in the game. Vaughn was 2-5 with a run on the day. In the two games, GW's Andrew Abokhair was 3-for-6 with two runs and Gavin Swanson finished with three RBI. UMES next heads south for a three-day, three-game series with East Tennessee State. |
