NORFOLK, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team defeated Coppin State University (CSU) at Marty L. Miller Field today. The Hawk sluggers pounced on the Eagles for 26 hits in the 16-6 victory. Senior Greg Cathell had an all-star day as he went 4-5 including a two-run homer, with three RBI and four runs.

UMES hardballers were also led by catcher Morgan Schirmer who went 4-6 including a double, recording two runs and one RBI. Joel Maher, Justin Hoban, Ronald Quick, Bernie Stratchko and Brad Powell all tallied three hits for the Hawks.

Junior Jason Janeski (3-9) grabbed the win, going six innings giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits.

The Hawks (16-33-1) bats were on fire as they jumped on Eagles starter Alex Hangland in the top of the first. Gaines led off with an infield single and stole second. With one out, Cathell hit a shot to rightfield to plate Gaines. A throwing error from Hangland would advance Cathell to third. Hoban and Quick would follow with back-to-back singles. Stratchko walked to load the bases. Schirmer would single to rightfield and score Hoban. A sacrifice-fly from second baseman Pete Mayta to rightfield would score Quick. Powell would ground out to the pitcher to cap the inning.

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the first, Coppin crossed a single run on a fielders' choice followed by a stolen base and a wild pitch.

UMES plated their fifth run in the top of the second. With two outs, Cathell reached on a walk. Hoban followed with a single up the middle and Quick singled to center to score Cathell.

 

 

Coppin (13-41-1) would answer back with two runs on two hits and one Hawk error in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit, 5-3.

The Hawk offense continued to rip into Hangland in the top of the third. Schirmer started the inning with a double to leftfield. On two-outs Gaines singled to rightfield and advanced to second on an error from Eagle rightfielder Ryan Deakyne that also crossed Schirmer. Maher reached on an RBI-single through the right-side, stole second and scored on a homer over the rightfield fence from Cathell.

The Eagles would go scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Bill Auch would come in to relieve Hangland.

The Fighting Hawks tacked on another four runs on six hits in the top of the fourth. Stratchko, Schirmer and Mayta dished out singles, on one out, to load the bases. Powell followed with a two-RBI double to rightfield. A sacrifice-fly to center, from Gaines, scored Mayta. Maher singled to rightfield to drive in Powell.

Both teams exchanged runs in the sixth inning. Powell led off the inning with a single to the third baseman. Gaines grounded-out into a double play to put two outs on the board. Three singles from Maher, Cathell and Hoban would load the bases for the Hawks. A three-RBI double from Quick would end the inning.

In the bottom of the frame, CSU plated two more runs on two hits, leaving two runners stranded.

In the top of the ninth, Coppin went to their bullpen and brought in Dennis Lane to slow the Hawks down.

Down 16-5 in the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles plated their final run on one hit and one Hawk error.

Ken Richardson, who came in to relieve Janeski in the bottom of the seventh, recorded his first save of the season in three innings of work. Richardson gave up just one run (unearned) on one hit while fanning three.

Hangland (1-7) suffered the loss for Coppin as he went three and two-thirds innings giving up 13 runs (all earned) on 17 hits.

Designated hitter Tommy Stratchko led the way for the Eagles, going 2-4 with a stolen base while registering a pair of runs. Rightfielder Ryan Deakyne also recorded a pair of hits on the day.

The Hawks advance to the next round where they will take on the loser of Bethune-Cookman and Delaware State this evening at 6:00 p.m.
