NORFOLK, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team shutout the Delaware State University (DSU) (17-33-1) baseball team tonight at Marty L. Miller field. The Hawks posted their first shut-out of the season defeating the Hornets 5-0 and advancing to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) finals.

Headlining the Hawk offense in the nightcap was catcher Morgan Schirmer and rightfielder Ronald Quick who both went 2-4.

Sophomore Brad Powell (2-0) pitched a sensational game, striking out three while yielding four hits over seven and two-thirds scoreless innings.

Following a scoreless opening frame for both sides, the Fighting Hawks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Quick singled to first-base. Third baseman Bernie Stratchko reached on a fielders' choice but unfortunately Quick would be called out at second. Schirmer followed with a single to right-center that advanced Stratchko to third. Second baseman Pete Mayta also reached on a fielders' choice that allowed Stratchko to score.

UMES (18-37-1) added some cushion runs in the bottom of the third. Centerfielder Joel Maher doubled to leftfield to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt from first baseman Greg Cathell placed Maher in scoring position. Designated hitter Justin Hoban ripped a shot down leftfield line to cross Maher. Hoban moved to third on a double from Quick. Quick and Hoban scored on a base hit from Schirmer and an error from DSU shortstop Tyler Hostetter. An infield single from Mayta placed Schirmer in scoring position while a single down rightfield line from leftfielder Anthony Jackson drove him in. Mayta would be caught stealing home and get thrown out to cap the inning.

In the eighth, freshman southpaw Mike Roberts (6) took the mound in relief of Powell to complete the shutout win and record his sixth save of the season.

Hornets starter Justin Bittner (2-3) suffered the loss going all eight innings giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits.

Catcher Randy Boyer led the Hornets offense registering two hits.

The Fighting Hawks will take on the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman College in the championship game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at Marty L. Miller Field.
