VIRGINIA BEACH, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team has been predicted to finish sixth in the 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference preseason poll, released Thursday by the league.
The Hawks earned 52 points in the poll, voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. UMES finished the 2009 campaign with the fourth seed in the MEAC Tournament and a record of 14-42 (9-9 in conference).
Bethune-Cookman was chosen to repeat as conference champion, receiving 196 points and all 14 first-place votes.
Norfolk State (112 points) is projected to finish second followed by North Carolina A&T (110), and Delaware State and Florida A&M (100) in a tie for fourth. Coppin State was picked to be seventh with 30 points.
Junior Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) was also named an honorable mention preseason All-MEAC selection as a designated hitter.
Chaikowsky was named an All-MEAC Second Team selection and to MEAC All-Tournament Team in 2009. He led the Hawks in batting average (.381), doubles (13), slugging (.619) and on-base percentage (.486) and tied for the team lead with four triples and two home runs.
The conference named Xavier Macklin (North Carolina A&T) and C.J. Lauriello (Bethune-Cookman) co-Players of the Year and B-CU's Ali Simpson Pitcher of the Year.
UMES opens the season Feb. 19-21, at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
