HAWK BASEBALL SET TO OPEN 2014 AT GEORGE WASHINGTON ON WEDNESDAY
ARLINGTON, Va. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team is set to open its 2014 campaign on Wednesday afternoon as the Hawks will travel to George Washington for a 2:30 p.m. start. The contest was originally supposed to be UMES’ fourth game of the season but the recent string of bad weather forced a cancellation of the Hawks’ season-opening series at South Florida.
UMES went 1-1 against George Washington last season, including a 4-1 victory in Arlington in April. Freshman J.P. Black (Elkton, Md.) was fantastic on the hill in the game as he threw a complete-game eight hitter to notch his first collegiate victory. Senior Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Del.) was 3-for-5 with a double, while junior Dustin Aigner (Melfa, Va.) was 2-for-3.
GW has won four of the last five meetings against UMES. The Colonials have scored atleast seven runs in each game of the span.
The game will see the first bits of action for a handful of Hawk players, including catcher Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who is slated to open the season behind the dish. Junior Greg Turlik (Gaithersburg, Md.) will get the nod in left to begin his Hawk career. Junior Joshua James (Milford, Del.) looks to keep his 11-game non-conference hit streak going, while senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) hopes to continue where he left off as UMES’ Most Valuable Player last year.
GW has 18 freshmen on the roster and many will see action in the contest. Much like UMES, the weather last week forced a cancellation in their season opening series. Last season, GW went 26-32 with a 15-9 mark in Atlantic-10 play. The Colonial ripped 10 homeruns, but the majority of their offense departed following the 2013 campaign. Owen Beitol is the top hitter returning with a .282 clip from the plate and 30 RBI, while Aaron Weisberg returns as the best pitcher with a 6-3 record and 3.32 ERA in 81.1 innings in 2013.
