STATESBORO, Ga. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team will stay on the road for its next several games as the Hawks head to Georgia Southern for a four-game set beginning this Friday, Feb. 21.  The Hawks will play Friday night at 6 p.m., before engaging in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. The series will conclude on Sunday, when the Hawks and Eagles hit the field for a 1:30 p.m. start.

UMES will look to build on its six-hit performance against George Washington on Wednesday, where the Hawks threatened and attacked early. UMES will run junior Devin Repine (Salisbury, Md.) out for the series opening start on Friday night, before junior Chipper Smith (Florence, S.C.) and freshman Philip Berry (Milford, Md.) get the starts in Saturday’s doubleheader. The Hawks’ Sunday starter has yet to be announced.

UMES (0-1) fell in its season opener to George Washington on Monday. The Hawks led 2-0 in the sixth inning, but GW scored a pair of runs over the next two innings to knot the game up at two. After UMES went silent in the top of the ninth, GW posted the victory after a single to right sent home the runner from third base. Sophomore J.P. Black (Elkton, Md.) was the top Hawk on the day with 4.2 innings pitched of scoreless ball, while senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) and junior Greg Turlik (Gaithersburg, Md.) each had two hits.

George Southern won its season-opening series against Georgia this past weekend and then followed it up with a win in their home opener against Georgia Tech. The Eagles won 9-3 and 18-4 in the series over UGA and took Wednesday’s contest against Georgia Tech by a score of 4-3. Aaron Mizell leads the way with a .529 batting average, six RBI and two homers. Chase Griffin is hitting a .429 clip and has two doubles and four RBI.

GSU will start Sam Howard against Repine on Friday, before Josh Wirsu and Avery Fagan throw on Saturday. Ryan Frederick will start in Sunday’s finale for the Eagles.
