LEXINGTON, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team is set to continue its spring schedule this weekend as the Hawk will participate in the round-robin Virginia Military Institute Tournament. UMES is one of three teams competing in the event with VMI and the University of Buffalo being the others. The Hawks will play the Keydets and Buffalos twice apiece.

The Hawks will send junior Chipper Smith (Florence, S.C.) to the hill in Friday's opener against Buffalo. Smith will make his second start of the season and despite one inning of trouble, was fairly efficient in his first outing against Georgia Southern. Senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) looks to build on his team-high .294 batting average, while freshman Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Del.) aim to keep swinging a hot stick for UMES. Sophomore Jordan Bone (Pittston, Pa.) has been superb for UMES with a 3.86 ERA in seven innings and seven strikeouts.

UMES plays four games altogether with one on Friday and Saturday, before participating in two matches on Sunday. The Hawks play against Buffalo at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and then against VMI at 12:30 on Saturday. The men conclude play in the event with a 12:30 start against Buffalo in Sunday's opener, before concluding the tournament against VMI at 4 p.m.

Smith squares off against Buffalo's LHP Mike McGree in the opener, before freshman Jesse Stinnett (Madison Heights, Va.) toes the rubber against VMI's RHP Andrew Woods in Saturday's opener. Freshman Philip Berry (Milford, Del.) gets the nod for UMES against Buffalo in Sunday's first game, while junior Devin Repine (Salisbury, Md.) will pitch for UMES in the tournament's final matchup.

The Hawks will be the home team on Friday against Buffalo, but will assume the title of road team for the last three.
