BYRON CAMPBELL, SKYLAR MURRAY CLAIM MEAC WEEKLY HONORS
April 21, 2014
NORFOLK, Va. – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference released its weekly honors and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team saw senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) and freshman Skylar Murray (Georgetown, Del.) claim MEAC Player of the Week and MEAC Rookie of the Week, respectively. The award is the first of the year for both student-athletes, upping UMES’ player of the week honors to seven on the year
Campbell crushed it this week for the Hawks. The senior hit .591 over a six game stretch to lead UMES to a 3-3 record. He was 2-for-6 with three RBI in the Hawks’ doubleheader split with Lehigh midweek, before going 11-for-16 (.688) in four games at Delaware State. It was his effort that helped the Hawks sweep a twinbill with DSU on Saturday, which was the first from a Hawk outfit against the Hornets in over a decade. He reached base in every contest this week, moving his consecutive games of reaching base to 14.
Murray made a big statement last week after he hit safely in five games, three of which were two-hit performances. He hit .471 between the contests and made 46 putouts without an error at first base. The local product played a big role in the Hawks’ 11-3 win over Lehigh last Wednesday when he went 2-for-3 with two runs to help UMES end the Mountain Hawks’ win streak at seven. He was also 2-for-3 twice against Delaware State and added a double in the series finale on Sunday.
Campbell’s MEAC Rookie of the Week selection is the second in two weeks for UMES as senior Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) was named MEAC Player of the Week for the week of April 14. Murray’s MEAC Rookie of the Week honor was the second for the Hawks this year as freshman Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) claimed the honor on March 20.
